Germany is one of the most mature e-commerce markets in Europe
Ecommerce News has found that e-commerce in Germany is expected to be worth €103.4 billion in 2020. This would mean 10% increase, as the online retail industry was worth €94 billion last year.
The report highlights that 95% of the German population is expected to be online this year. And consumer adoption of e-commerce has always been high. For comparison, 84% of Germans bought something online in 2019.
Last year, the main drivers of online purchases were “direct delivery to my home” (67%), followed by “available round the clock” (66%) and “more convenient way of shopping” (61%).
As to the most popular devices for online shopping, 49% of online shoppers in Germany used a smartphone, whereas 42% used the desktop PC.
We’ve reported that German households’ bank deposits were up only €5.8 billion, which was unusually low even for the seasonally weak Q1 2020.
