According to Ecommerce News, 6 companies that have exceeded the billion euros mark are leading the ranking of Austria’s largest retailers: Rewe, Spar, Hofer, Lidl, XXXL Group, and Media Saturn. Together, they generate 32% of all retail sales in Austria.

The report states that the retail sector in Austria was worth €62 billion. Besides, nearly 9% of retail-relevant consumer spending is made online.

E-commerce is especially popular in the category Books & Magazine, accounting for 29.3% of total sales. 20.5% and 20% go to Consumer electronics and Clothing & Shoes, respectively.

In the top 10, there are supermarkets that all have a strong online presence. There’s even a pure online player in the top 10, which is Amazon.

The company climbed from the 11th to 9th place in 2019, but now it ranks 8th with sales in Austria being worth €763 million. Amazon’s sales grew by 10.5% compared to the year before.

The data reveals that Zalando achieved even more significant growth in Austria. It’s turnover increased by half from €230 million in 2017 to €342 million in 2018. This way, it went from the 29th place to the 22nd place in the annual ranking.

At the same time, only 18 of the largest players, don’t sell online across Austria. This includes grocery stores like Nah & Frisch, and Nordsee, retailers like Primark, Action, Möbel Ludwig, and Bauer.

We’ve reported that Adyen and Zalando expand their partnership, as the global payments provider is set to process Zalando’s credit card payments in all European markets.
