Airwallex has launched Airi, a new digital wallet that helps simplify one-click purchasing by securely saving your credit card info and allowing users to make purchases in under 10 seconds. Although Airi is not currently agent–based, it is part of Airwallex’s broader strategy to build towards a future where payments are largely made by software agents instead of people.

The launch comes alongside Airwallex’s Series H funding round, which valued the company at around $11 billion and marked a significant acceleration in its move toward what it broadly defines as autonomous and AI-driven financial infrastructure. The timing is notable: Airi is being introduced not as a standalone product, but as an early layer in a wider transformation of how Airwallex expects commerce to operate.
Currently, Airi operates as a wallet for consumers to use for one-click purchases. It helps reduce friction by securely holding all of a consumer‘s payment information, thus allowing for seamless repeated purchases at lightning speed. So, it serves the ultimate need of Airi; to optimize conversions (i.e., reduce payment abandonment and increase payment speed) but does not change any of the current payment systems.
As Airi is built directly into Airwallex Payments, customers will have access to:
-
Local currencies and payment methods
-
Multi-currency settlement
-
AI-powered fraud prevention with Optimize 360
However, Airwallex is explicit that Airi’s role will evolve. The company has outlined a roadmap in which Airi becomes a secure agentic wallet, enabling customers to authorize AI agents to transact on their behalf without exposing sensitive payment data directly. In this future model, the wallet shifts from being a storage and authentication layer into an authorization interface for delegated payments.
This distinction is critical. Airi itself is not yet capable of agent-initiated payments. Instead, Airwallex is building the infrastructure required for that transition through its Agentic Commerce Suite, which is designed to allow merchants to accept and manage payments initiated by AI agents. The suite effectively sits on the merchant side of the transaction, preparing checkout systems to handle a new category of payer: autonomous software agents acting on behalf of users.
Taken together, Airi and the Agentic Commerce Suite form two sides of the same strategic direction. Airi represents the consumer-facing entry point today focused on speed and convenience, while the Agentic Commerce Suite represents the backend readiness layer for a future where purchasing decisions may be delegated to non-human actors. One product optimizes current conversion flows, the other prepares infrastructure for a shift that has not yet fully materialized.
This architecture aligns with Airwallex’s broader platform evolution, which has increasingly emphasized programmable financial infrastructure rather than traditional payments processing. The company’s earlier work on agent-oriented financial systems laid the groundwork for connecting payments, treasury, and compliance into a unified environment capable of supporting automated decision-making. Airi now extends that vision into the consumer checkout experience, albeit in a pre-agentic form.
“We believe this is the most consequential moment in the history of global finance, and we are building accordingly,” said Jack Zhang, co-founder and CEO of Airwallex. “A decade ago, we did not know exactly what the agentic economy would look like, but we built a foundation for it. The licenses, local network integrations, and settlement rails we spent ten years constructing are precisely the kind of infrastructure it needs. This new capital lets us move faster into Airwallex’s next chapter: autonomous finance, agentic commerce, and the infrastructure to power both.”
The commercial implication is straightforward: even before full agentic commerce arrives, Airwallex is positioning itself to capture both sides of the transition. For starters, Airi improves conversion today by reducing friction in checkout flows. In addition, Airwallex has built out its Commerce Agentics Suite for merchants to accept payments from AI-driven channels as they emerge.
What makes the launch strategically significant is not that Airi is already agentic, but that it defines the entry point for a transition Airwallex expects to unfold gradually. The company is effectively building a bridge between today’s checkout optimization problem and tomorrow’s agent-mediated commerce stack, starting with a wallet that makes payments faster, and ending with a system that may not require a human to click “buy” at all.
