From UPI to BNPL: Behind the Curtains of India Payment Gateway Revolution

India payment gateway transformation is one of the most significant success stories in global fintech. Boasting an inclusive, fast and efficient digital finance sector, India is a vivid illustration of payment technology development contributing to the economic growth and society’s well-being.

From UPI to BNPL: Behind the Curtains of India Payment Gateway Revolution

One of the most powerful emerging economies in the world, India is home to an efficient, ubiquitous, real-time payment system called Unified Payments Interface (UPI). This revolutionary solution has been enabling instant bank-to-bank transfers using mobile apps and QR codes for nine years now. It gave way to more inclusive and multi-functional payment gateways, too.

UPI Role in India Digital Payment Ecosystem

The 2016 demonetization was a turning point in India’s digital economy. Overnight, ₹500 and ₹1000 notes were invalidated, and cash payments became much scarcer. Although it did cause temporary hurdles to businesses and consumers alike, eventually, the policy triggered massive adoption of digital payments. However, that story wouldn’t be full without UPI, which launched the same year.

For the first time in India, a system interoperable across numerous payment apps (e.g. PhonePe, Google Pay, BHIM) allowed real-time bank-to-bank transfers, whether for peer, retail, or business transactions. Local payment gateways quickly integrated UPI for seamless checkout and benefited from it. Today, the number of monthly UPI transactions is well over 15 billion, surging from 1 million in 2016. Moreover, in 2023, India processed more digital real-time payments than any other country — over 130 billion via UPI only.

India Payment Gateway Development After Pandemic

As in many countries of the world, the pandemic of 2020 negatively affected the economy of India but significantly boosted its digital payment market. UPI has been a cornerstone of the accelerated growth in this realm. Its robust functionality empowered payment gateways to accept payments online instantly. Moreover, the access to payment gateway infrastructure expanded even to the smallest micro businesses without a dedicated website. They could accept payments in alternative but still convenient ways (via payment links, QR codes, WhatsApp channels, etc.).

Due to healthcare concerns, contactless payments and remote mobile or e-commerce gained great prominence. Even in rural areas and traditionally cash-heavy sectors, like small-item retail or Kirana stores, digital payments started to see increased adoption. Payment gateways in India reacted properly. They began introducing new features, turning from simple transaction processors into full-stack multi-functional fintech platforms ripe with embedded finance tools like BNPL, payroll, and insurance.

Top Payment Gateway Providers in India

While several global or international payment gateway companies operate actively in India, either directly or via partnerships with local entities, today we’ll speak about domestic providers who grew in the Indian market along with the digital payment needs of the local population.

Razorpay

Razorpay is a top Indian payment gateway and fintech platform focused on security, compliance, and customer-centric innovation. It offers a range of payment services that go along with seamless integration, broad payment method support, and advanced business banking solutions. Razorpay gateway enables merchants to accept domestic and international credit and debit cards, net banking, UPI, EMIs, PayLater, recurring billing, UPI autopay, and mobile wallets (including JioMoney, Mobikwik, Airtel Money, FreeCharge, Ola Money, and PayZapp. All this variety comes at a cost of 2%-3% per transaction. Besides, local businesses benefit from embedded analytics and additional fintech solutions provided via RazorpayX. These include payroll, HRMS, current accounts, working capital loans, corporate cards, and business banking services.

Paytm

Paytm payment gateway can be used by both online and offline merchants in India. The solution supports numerous payment methods, like UPI, credit and debit cards, net banking, QR-based mobile payments, and, of course, the firm’s own Paytm Wallet. The settlement happens in INR, though, and the use of international credit and debit cards as well as the Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) feature is somehow limited. To activate this functionality, merchants must obtain approval from Paytm’s partner banks, which adds some hurdles to the process. However, the fintech company still enjoys a massive user base, largely due to its extensive service suite, ranging from lending and insurance to equity and mutual fund investing and POS hardware. Paytm also offers competitive pricing, with zero transaction fees for many transaction types.

Cashfree

Cashfree combines the roles of a payment gateway and API banking company in India. It serves over 800,000 local businesses, enabling them to both accept and disburse payments efficiently. Its API-first infrastructure is suitable for bulk payouts to bank accounts, UPI IDs, cards, or wallets, marketplace settlements, cross-border payments, and subscription billing. The gateway supports multiple payment modes, including credit/debit cards, net banking, UPI, Paytm and other wallets, EMI, Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL), NEFT, IMPS, and PayPal for international payments. The platform integrates with major e-commerce platforms (Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento, Wix) and offers customizable checkouts. Besides, Cashfree employs dynamic routing to minimize payment failures and offers customized pricing plans for businesses with high transaction volumes or microtransactions.

Instamojo

Instamojo is an Indian payment gateway platform, particularly popular among SMBs. The platform enables customizable payment links that can collect additional information like shipping and GST details. It also has an integrated online store platform. Checkouts are customizable too, whether it’s a dedicated page or a payment button on a website or blog. Instamojo supports credit and debit cards, net banking, UPI, EMI, and local wallets like Freecharge, OlaMoney, JioMoney, and MobiKwik. What’s most important for small businesses is that they can pass the transaction fee to customers with the convenience fee feature. This allows even micro merchants to use Instamojo’s services without incurring transaction costs (from 2% to 5% + ₹3 per transaction) themselves.

PayU

PayU enables multi-channel commerce, supporting payments via QR codes, net banking, wallets, credit/debit cards, UPI, EMI, and flexible BNPL solutions. Its patented Smart Routing Engine optimizes transaction success rates by directing payments through the most efficient processing channels. PayU’s APIs and SDKs facilitate easy integration with websites and mobile applications. Businesses can test their payment APIs with product integration in a real-time testing environment before launch. The fintech offers two different service suites, designed specifically for SMBs and large enterprises. The latter is more feature-rich and provides enhanced analytics. PayU charges industry-standard fees of about 2%-3% per transaction, remaining affordable for merchants.

How Payment Gateway Transformation Helps India’s Economy Thrive

With the introduction of real-time payment systems and enhanced payment gateway technology, India’s economy received a significant boost. Many retail sectors and business activities started formalizing, filling the national treasury with tax income. Both businesses and individuals got more opportunities to access financing, expanding their credit histories with BNPL and EMI (even on debit cards). Consumer spending kept growing as flexible payments became highly accessible. Finally, UPI QR codes became omnipresent, facilitating digital transactions for high-end boutiques and vegetable carts alike.

The growth of financial inclusion had a positive effect on the national economy as a whole. India’s GDP has grown robustly since the introduction of UPI. Its annual growth rates varied between 4% and 8% over the period, not taking into account the decline registered in 2020 as a result of the global pandemic crisis.

From UPI to BNPL: Behind the Curtains of India Payment Gateway Revolution

Impact of Payment Gateway Boost on India Retail

Online and offline merchants, who drive more than half of India’s GDP, saw an enormous expansion of the national digital payments infrastructure that simplifies online transactions and partner payouts. Depending on the payment gateway and additional tools businesses use, some retailers enjoyed up to a 33% reduction in cart abandonment rates achieved through one-click checkouts, the absence of redirection to third-party sites, payment method diversity, fast payment processing, and mobile interface optimization.

Thus, online retailers who managed to optimize their payment gateway so that processing time went down from 8 seconds to 2 seconds saw a 15% uplift in conversion rates. During high-traffic events like flash or seasonal sales, optimizing payment gateway performance reduced cart abandonment even more – by 50%. In addition to higher conversion rates, e-commerce firms report saving significant costs on cash-on-delivery-related charges (about ₹40 per delivery plus fraud/returns costs).

Merchants in India have a wide selection of payment gateways available. Besides third-party providers, they also have an option to embed a white-label payment gateway, easily customized to align with the specific requirements of their business. In this case, they can maintain a consistent brand identity, fully control the functionality of the payment processing solution, and boost client satisfaction with any modifications needed.

Payment gateways in India have gotten way faster thanks to new tech like blockchain, cloud systems, and smart AI routing. These upgrades help cut down delays and reduce failed transactions. Nowadays, gateways can handle over 10,000 transactions per second, so even during busy times like festivals or flash sales, payments go through almost instantly without any hiccups.

As for the payouts, platforms like Cashfree and Razorpay have made it super easy for businesses to send bulk payments, whether it’s salaries, vendor bills, or refunds, right to bank accounts, UPI IDs, wallets, or cards. These payouts happen instantly or within minutes, which is a huge leap from the 2010s when it used to take several days.

Also, the places where you can pay digitally have exploded in number. By the end of FY 2025–26, India is expected to have around 5.4 million POS machines and 170 million QR codes out there. This massive spread of payment points means people can pay faster and easier in physical stores, too. Meanwhile, e-commerce in India has been growing double-digits lately.

India Payment Gateway Revolution Summed Up

India is a brilliant example of an emerging economy taking advantage of digital payment infrastructure to boost its economy. Its transition to real-time payments not only reduced payment processing and disbursement times but also improved customer satisfaction and cart abandonment rates. As customer spending formalized and grew robustly, both businesses and consumers got access to new forms of payment technology and financing. All this boosted the national GDP significantly and brought local e-commerce to a state of boom.

The local payment gateway market is ripe with both international and domestic solutions, catering to the varying needs of Indian merchants and businesses. They are increasingly turning into ‘super apps’, combining multiple payment and broader finance functionalities in one place. Yet, many entities prefer configurable and flexible payment technologies with a vast number of integrations, embedded in white label payment gateways. These platforms can achieve all the goals of in-house payment processing software without upfront development costs.
