Shoptalk Europe 2026 highlighted that future retail success will depend on leveraging high-quality data, innovative discovery channels, close-knit creator ecosystems, retail media networks, and human expertise, all neatly combined into a unified AI-driven commerce strategy. Challenging? Sure. But possible, with actionable insights over 4,500 attendees got at one of the most comprehensive European retail conferences of the year.

Shoptalk Europe welcomed over 4,500 attendees in 2026
Shoptalk Europe 2026 took place at the Fira Gran Via venue in Barcelona, Spain during June 9–11, 2026. The major industry gathering attracted 4,500 attendees this year, with 1 in 3 being C-suite executives and over 1,600 visitors belonging to retail and brand decision-makers. About 54% of participants represented retailers and brands. The others came from marketing, fintech, social media, and other business sectors. PaySpace Magazine Global representatives also had the honour to join the vibrant e-commerce community at Shoptalk Europe 2026.
The conference ran across five main stages: The Headliner Stage (dedicated to main keynotes), The Sunset Stage (where some solid AI discussions were happening), The Ultraviolet Stage, The Canopy Stage, and The Woodstack Stage (for startup pitches and investor panels). It also had two Discovery Stages powered by the MACH Alliance, which hosted sponsored short-form sessions. Additionally, a structured networking Meetup Programme of pre-scheduled B2B meetings had been running along the main theoretical agenda throughout all three days.

Unlike keynotes or fireside chats, where you would mostly appreciate the speakers’ expertise and eloquence, the “Meetup Programme” was the core practical engine of the whole event. Shoptalk Europe differs from many similar events as it substitutes random networking with structured 1:1 business matchmaking sessions. The novel meeting system is pre-scheduled and has a double opt-in character to ensure both parties are equally interested in the networking. Each pair of business representatives is assigned a specific table number where they can meet at a pre-arranged time slot for a 15-minute-long discussion held in a dedicated Meetup area on the expo floor.
Reminding a little of a speed dating format adopted for business purposes, these short meetups are highly effective, since all the matches are based on the combination of mutual interest and relevance scoring that comes from pre-filled attendee profiles. Only when both sides agree does a meeting move forward, which eliminates a chance of wasted precious time, since even 15 minutes at an event like Shoptalk can bring its participants enormous value.

The conference agenda revolved around a broad set of themes, though AI captured the main focus, just as in investors and fintech circles. Speakers discussed innovations brought by this smart tech, including AI Commerce, AI in Action, and AI-Driven Transformation, alongside broader topics focused on customer engagement, such as Authentic Consumer Connections, Capturing Consumer Attention, and Creative Content That Converts.
“In a few years time, everybody is going to be using agents all the time, everybody is going to be paying with crypto, and nobody is going to be clicking and tapping,” said David Ingram, Chief Product Officer at Rezolve Ai. “Two years from now this will be the norm. Three years from now we will look back at the first 30 years of e-commerce and think: it was so simplistic.”
Shoptalk Europe also explored innovation and industry change through Emerging Retail Tech, Future-Ready Commerce, and Unlocking Tech Innovation, as well as the emotional and experiential side of retail with Emotionally Engaging Retail. Additional focus areas included European Retail’s Macro Pressures, Growth Models & Markets, Optimising for Growth, New Dynamics in Retail Media, and the evolving marketing landscape across The Future of Marketing and The New Marketing Landscape.

A large share of the event discussions has focused on how product discovery is shifting away from traditional search and toward content-driven environments, creators’ recommendations and suggestions brought to users by AI agent analysis. This was the main topic for “Navigating Rapid AI Adoption in Retail” session at Sunset Stage with Holden Bale, Global Chief Strategy Officer at Merkle and Michelle Evans, Global Lead Retail Insights at Euromonitor International, as well as “Agentic Commerce: What’s Here, Real, and Next?” conversation with Dido Schmidt, Director Global Partnerships Commerce at Google, and Mark Elkins, General Manager Global Ecommerce at L’Oreal.
Rik Strubel, CMO at DOUGLAS Group, Andrew Lederman, VP Global Digital Commerce at Mondelēz International, and Amish Mehta, Director of AI & Agentic Commerce at Boots, shared their perspectives on how to remain seen in the age of AI commerce, while Graeme Smith, SVP Engineering & Science, Zalando, Fiona Tan, CTO, Wayfair, Maximilian Einöder, VP Data & AI, MediaMarktSaturn, and Carlos Sanchez Altable, Partner at McKinsey & Company, (as moderator) focused on leveraging the power of data while “building a data-enabled business for AI-readiness”.

What most speakers agree on is that AI product discovery, that now seems a challenge to earlier-known brand visibility patterns, will ultimately bring in lots of commercial opportunities to retailers resulting in direct profits. In fact, more than a third of industry professionals surveyed by Shoptalk and Placer.ai expect agentic commerce to create entirely new buying occasions, leading shoppers to spend more overall.
“The infrastructure for agentic commerce is being built right now in the US, and we believe Europe is six to twelve months behind. With such a positive outlook, we expect to see investment accelerate to create solutions that will convert the attention consumers are already giving to answer engines into commerce.”Adam Plom, VP of Content at Shoptalk Europe
Research from Merkle, developed exclusively for Shoptalk, found that 37% of US consumers were using AI tools at least sometimes or often regularly for shopping in November 2025. By February 2026, that number had already risen to 47%. What situation do we have in June, considering that the AI search result is the first thing you see while browsing on most smartphone systems, remains a rhetorical question, but one that surely shows significant growth dynamics.

Besides the AI adaptation, retailers of the XXI century have to deal with the fact that their consumers do not primarily come from search platforms, whether in traditional sense or AI-driven ones. Social media and creator platforms such as TikTok Shop, Pinterest, Reddit, and creator ecosystems are increasingly influencing purchasing decisions before consumers actively search for products.
And when they do search for products, consumers do not use the same search models they used to just a while ago. According to Rezolve Ai’s ShopTalk Europe Insight Report released last week, the long, specific, conversational prompts associated with intent-driven behavior as an alternative to several keyword search, grew from 25% to 40% of total search activity. This specified search allows people to shop more confidently and efficiently. Thus, the share of purchases completed within a single search session rose from 60% to 70% this year.

Attendees at Shoptalk Europe 2026
The event was not all talk despite its name. At Shoptalk Europe, the startup pitch competition spotlighted emerging retail innovation, with founders competing before both industry judges and a live audience. Phoebe Gormley, CEO of Maeve AI, was awarded the Audience Choice Award, while Melissa MacDermott, CEO of Reclaim, received the Judges’ Choice Award, reflecting strong recognition from both attendees and the expert panel for their respective solutions.
Maeve AI is an AI-driven retail solution focused on improving fashion discovery and personalization, helping brands and consumers better match products to individual style preferences. Reclaim is a productivity and scheduling platform designed to optimise time management by intelligently organising calendars and automating task planning to improve day-to-day efficiency.

The event concluded with final sessions reflecting on the rapid acceleration of AI in commerce and the practical steps retailers and brands need to take to stay competitive, particularly as experimentation moves toward real-world deployment. This was followed by a closing networking reception and party, where delegates, speakers, and founders gathered informally to continue discussions, build connections, and celebrate the end of the conference in a more relaxed setting.
To sum up, Shoptalk Europe’s agenda brought together retail and tech leaders to dig into how AI, data, and changing consumer habits are reshaping commerce. Across keynotes, panels, and interactive sessions, conversations centred on AI-driven transformation, new retail growth models, emerging technologies, and how brands can create more emotionally engaging and authentic customer experiences. There was also plenty of focus on the bigger picture challenges for European retail, from macroeconomic pressures to the ongoing fight for consumer attention in an increasingly fragmented digital landscape.
