The global payments provider filed two applications with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) this month.

While not all patents may result in new products or features, Visa tries to keep abreast of the fintech trends. Therefore, one of the applications includes “virtual environments in which users can interact for recreational, leisure or entertainment purposes accessible in the virtual world.”

Meanwhile, the other trademark request deals with “non-downloadable virtual goods.” Those include NFTs and software for digital currency storage.

Crypto wallet services are a natural continuation of Visa’s previous patents. In 2020, Visa filed an application for turning physical fiat currency into a newly digitized version.

Other payment giants such as Mastercard and American Express have filed metaverse trademark applications earlier.
