Bahrain is set to become one of the next key hubs for Alipay+ in the Middle East as Ant International and BENEFIT move forward with a partnership announced in late November 2025.
The rollout is planned for 2026 and will integrate Alipay+ with the national BENEFIT QR scheme. This creates a single technical bridge that allows international visitors to pay Bahraini merchants using their preferred Alipay+ partner wallets without any new integrations on the merchant side.
The collaboration positions Bahrain as a strategic early market thanks to its unified national payments infrastructure, strong digital adoption and ongoing financial sector transformation. By connecting directly to the national QR system, Ant International can activate acceptance across thousands of merchants at once, including the approximately fifteen thousand already enabled for BENEFIT QR. This model also accelerates regulatory alignment and reduces friction for acquirers, merchants and consumers.
BENEFIT plays a central role in this process. As Bahrain’s national payments switch and the operator of BENEFIT QR, the company oversees the country’s core digital payment rails and acts as a technical and operational anchor for external partners. Its ability to manage integration at the scheme level is one of the main reasons Bahrain offers such a compelling starting point for Alipay+ expansion in the wider Gulf region.
For Ant International, Bahrain fits into a broader pattern of partnerships across Asia and emerging markets, where Alipay+ has been integrated with national QR schemes or local wallets in places such as Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea, Cambodia, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Kazakhstan. The company has also expanded its presence in the Gulf, including opening a regional office in Riyadh as demand grows for more seamless cross-border retail and tourism payments.
The Bahrain agreement introduces several cooperation elements that the partners highlight as distinctive. These include a scalable QR-to-wallet bridge that simplifies acceptance for inbound tourists, exploration of outbound use cases for Bahraini consumers in Alipay+-supported markets, and joint work on next-generation digital payment frameworks for the Kingdom. All of these initiatives support the national vision for a more innovative, interoperabl,e and internationally connected payments ecosystem.
As preparations for the rollout continue, the partnership between BENEFIT and Ant International signals a significant step forward for cross-border digital commerce in the region. It also reflects Bahrain’s growing role as a testbed for advanced payment infrastructure that can serve both local consumers and global visitors.
