Today, Klarna announces the launch of KlarnaUSD, a U.S. dollar-backed stablecoin, marking the company’s entry into blockchain-based payments. KlarnaUSD will initially operate on Tempo, the innovative layer-1 blockchain jointly developed by Stripe and Paradigm, with mainnet launch planned for 2026.

KlarnaUSD stablecoin will provide a new digital payment option within Klarna’s already well-developed payment and e-commerce ecosystem. The launch comes at a time when stablecoins are becoming an increasingly important part of global finance, with usage expanding far beyond the crypto industry.
Stablecoin adoption has accelerated significantly over the past 24 months. The total market capitalization of major stablecoins now exceeds $250 billion, driven by growing institutional interest and wider consumer use in cross-border transfers, e-commerce, and remittances.
At the same time, blockchain-based stablecoin transfers reached $27 trillion in annual volume, surpassing the combined transaction throughput of most traditional card networks. This shift reflects a broader trend: stablecoins are increasingly viewed as efficient, low-cost digital payment tools suitable for global, 24/7 settlement.
To support KlarnaUSD, Klarna has chosen to build on Tempo, a new independent layer-1 blockchain designed specifically for payment flows. Developed by Stripe, that has recently accelerated its stablecoin initiatives, and Paradigm, Tempo takes a focused approach to financial transactions by prioritizing high throughput, predictable settlement times, and business-friendly transaction features. The network offers sub-second finality, stablecoin-denominated transaction fees, batch transfer capabilities, payment reference fields, and compliance-ready controls, including optional allowlists and sanctions screening.
Tempo’s payment-oriented design contrasts with more common, general-purpose blockchains such as Ethereum or Solana, which serve diverse use cases from trading to gaming to decentralized applications, and therefore experience greater volatility in fees, congestion from unrelated on-chain activity, and dependence on native cryptocurrencies for transaction costs. By selecting Tempo, Klarna aims to ensure that KlarnaUSD transactions remain fast, stable, and operationally aligned with regulated financial services requirements.
The introduction of KlarnaUSD positions Klarna within the rapidly developing stablecoin landscape and reflects the company’s broader strategy to enhance global money-movement capabilities. As demand for digital settlement methods increases, KlarnaUSD and the underlying Tempo infrastructure create new opportunities to deliver fast, transparent, and cost-efficient payment experiences for consumers and merchants worldwide.
