The e-commerce giant Amazon and Microsoft, one of the leaders of the global technology sector, reported on cooperation to ensure a high level of consumer protection from fraudulent methods involving the actions of an attacker on behalf of another person or any organization on an illegal basis.
This collaboration is the first example of the partnership of these companies in the sphere of countering crimes in the digital space.
Amazon, Microsoft, and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in India have jointly taken action against individuals who are involved in fraudulent activities with technical support. The relevant information is contained in a message that was published last Thursday, October 19, on the blog of the e-commerce giant.
The CBI conducted several raids on illegal call centers located in India. These organizations, whose activities violate the current legislation of the South Asian country, posed as customer support services for Microsoft and Amazon. The call centers were targeted at more than 2,000 people living in the United States, Great Britain, Canada, Germany, Spain, and Australia. In this case, the fraudulent impact was directed at the customers of the mentioned world-famous retailer and technology giant.
Last year, Amazon initiated the removal of more than 20,000 phishing websites and 10,000 phone numbers that were used as part of felonious activities carried out on the principle of so-called substitution, involving interaction with victims on behalf of other organizations or persons. The sufferers of these criminal schemes, believing that they were communicating with official representatives of companies, fulfilled the requirements of the scammers.
Amazon recommends its customers view the history of genuine orders and correspondence on the website or in the app of the e-commerce giant.
Daniel Flowe, head of identification strategy at Refinitiv, says that the desire of most consumers to communicate with a living person, rather than immerse themselves in various automated and robotic procedures, has become a kind of opportunity for fraudsters that they use for criminal purposes. At the same time, the creation of call centers is a difficult task for companies, providing for several necessities, including hiring staff and their rapid training, technical equipment of the corresponding unit, and financial support for its functioning.
