In a country where only 5% people use credit cards, OPay’s digital wallet has 40 million monthly active users. EBANX will be the first global business to leverage the wallet for subscription payments.

Brazilian paytech EBANX established a partnership with Nigeria’s leading digital bank OPay. EBANX will integrate OPay Direct Debit solution at its checkout. Through this checkout button, global subscription businesses will be able to charge their customers in Nigeria, Africa’s largest e-commerce market.
OPay digital wallet is one of the most popular payment solutions in the country. In Nigeria, contrary to many developed economies, credit card ownership is scarce. Only 5% of local population have access to traditional bank credit products. Meanwhile, 84% of Nigerians have mobile phones. That allows them to use alternative banking and payment services.
As EBANX’s earlier report showed, Nigerians prefer digital wallets and bank transfers as payment methods. Together, they account for 65% of the country’s large e-commerce volume. The country’s e-commerce market size currently stands at $30 billion.
“This difference creates a significant opportunity for global merchants to expand recurring payment coverage beyond traditional card-on-file models,” said Eduardo de Abreu, Chief Product Officer (CPO) of EBANX.
OPay alone has 40 million monthly active users in Nigeria, roughly one-third of the country’s total population. EBANX will be the first global payment provider to test the new OPay Direct Debit tool, which ties recurring transactions to a mobile wallet instead of traditional bank card details.
To set up subscription payments, OPay users have to authorise in-app once and enable the option. They don’t have to re-enter payment details for every recurring transaction.
“Our partnership with EBANX isn’t just processing transactions; it’s shaping the future of digital payments across the region,” said Elizabeth Wang, Chief Commercial Officer, OPay. “This will give Nigerians an easy, fast and convenient way to pay for the global digital services they love, from streaming platforms to online tools. With OPay Direct Debit, customers can enjoy a simple payment experience while staying in control of their subscriptions.”
Earlier this year, EBANX struck a similar deal with South Africa’s Canva. It now offers recurring payments for SaaS businesses via Capitec Pay’s A2A solution. Overall, EBANX offers recurring alternative payment solutions in 13 emerging markets across Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
