Exciting Milestone for Danish Fintech Scene: Flatpay Becomes Denmark’s Fastest Fintech Unicorn

Founded in Copenhagen, Flatpay is a payment platform designed to simplify and streamline how small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) accept card payments. In just about three years, the company has reached a valuation of around $1.7 billion (over €1.5 billion), after securing a major growth financing round (~€146.5 million) to accelerate its expansion.

Danish startup is rapidly scaling in Europe, targeting larger volumes and recurring revenue. For instance, the company crossed more than €100 million in annual recurring revenue (ARR) and is reportedly growing by roughly €1 million per day.

Becoming a unicorn so rapidly signals strong investor confidence and product-market fit in a competitive payments fintech market. Flatpay’s focus on SMBs, which represent almost the entire business population in Europe (99,8%), with a simpler pricing model and modern stack offerings, pays out.

While the Nordic fintech ecosystem has hundreds of players (Denmark alone has about 350 fintech firms), reaching unicorn status in this market is still rare. According to StartupBlink, Denmark has hosted only two unicorn startups (Pleo and Lunar) so far.

At the European level, the deal is also notable. While fintech is one of the most prolific sectors in producing unicorns, the overall funding pace has slowed post-2021. Therefore, Flatpay’s growth tempo (reaching a multi-billion-dollar valuation in just a few years) highlights how payments infrastructure remains a high-velocity space despite economic and market turbulence.
