Pay by Bank will now be available for Giant Food and Stop & Shop customers as Ahold Delhaize USA expands its pilot project with Fiserv across additional digital channels.

Ahold Delhaize, one of the world’s largest food retail groups, is scaling up its Pay by Bank partnership with the global fintech infrastructure provider Fiserv.
Having started as a pilot initiative in late 2025, today Pay by Bank digital payment option rolls out for the U.S. shoppers across the e-commerce and mobile commerce portals of three Ahold Delhaize USA grocery brands: The GIANT Company, Giant Food and Stop & Shop.
The ability to pay “by bank” means absence of inserting card details at the checkout or store them at merchant’s platform for online shopping purpose. Instead, the retailer’s websites and apps will connect directly to the customer’s bank account. Such A2A money transfers are still less popular on a global scale than card transactions. However, they are quickly gaining traction due to high speed, ease of use, less friction, and enhanced security due to the absence of numerous mediators handling the settlement.
In the U.S., card payments are also still dominant in e-commerce and multi-channel retail. The Federal Reserve’s Diary of Consumer Payment Choice 2025 estimates that:
- Credit cards account for 35% of all payments
- Debit cards: 30%
- Total cards share: 65% of all consumer payments
Meanwhile, direct bank payments (such as ACH, pay-by-bank, account-to-account) account for roughly 10–11% of consumer payments by number. However, the majority of those payments are not shopping but utility bills, payroll, P2P transfers, etc. Yet, embedding direct payments smoothly into retail checkout experience may change the payment landscape gradually.
According to the partners, tens of thousands of customers have opted for Pay by Bank enrollment since the retailer first introduced this functionality.
The payment option addition serves as a boost for Ahold Delhaize USA omnichannel commerce platform. The company created this comprehensive infrastructure to unify its entire grocery business, with numerous online and offline channels, into a single system. The platform serves 26 million customers weekly across over 2,000 stores of the food giant’s U.S. brands.
“Expanding digital payment choice is an example of how we continue to enhance our omnichannel platform, which in turn enables Ahold Delhaize USA brands to better serve their customers,” said Keith Nicks, chief commercial and digital officer at Ahold Delhaize USA.
Ahold Delhaize is a top-tier global supermarket operator, present in U.S. (Food Lion, Stop & Shop, Giant Food, The GIANT Company, Hannaford) and European markets (Albert Heijn, Delhaize, Mega Image).
