Mastercard BIN Sponsor Plus accreditation programme aims to facilitate card launch for fintech companies in the UK by connecting them with trusted financial institutions that can help them bring card products to market seamlessly.

Mastercard has introduced a BIN Sponsor Plus accreditation programme in UK to facilitate connections between payment businesses and licensed banks/financial institutions ready to provide access to one of their BIN ranges and handling compliance, regulatory, and scheme obligations.
A Bank Identification Number (BIN), sometimes also called an IIN (Issuer Identification Number), is a key part of the card payment ecosystem. This set of digits at the start of a card number is not a random symbols string. It bears important information that tells payment networks like Mastercard who issued the card, what type of card it is (credit, debit, prepaid), and how to route and authorise this card’s transactions securely across the payment system.
Fintechs and non-bank businesses typically do not hold issuing licenses or direct membership with Mastercard or other card networks. As a result, they cannot directly obtain or manage BINs on their own. Instead, they need to partner with the financial institutions which can legally do that. BIN sponsorship is created exactly for this purpose: licensed banks “sponsor” the fintech’s card programme wit their BIN capabilities and a fintech company can offer Mastercard-branded payment cards (whether physical or virtual) without becoming a full issuer itself.
Being one of the biggest fintech markets, with revenues about £32B in 2024 and strong funding growth in 2025, the UK has an immediate demand for accredited sponsor relationships.
A BIN sponsor is a registered financial institution that already has a principal membership with Mastercard and the legal ability to issue cards. Looking for the right sponsor is now getting easier through Mastercard’s new BIN Sponsor Plus programme. Within its frameworks, the accredited sponsors must meet enhanced standards of due diligence, training, and operational capability. Mastercard also provides specialised support and a formal “Partner Mark” recognising their participation.
So far, Mastercard named the four founding participants in the programme (Transact Pay, PSI Pay, IDT Financial Services, and Edenred Payment Solutions), who have committed to enhanced due diligence and training in line with the accreditation standards. In time, this vetted list of partners that fintechs and other businesses can work with to launch card programmes easily might expand.
