OpenAI has launched the OpenAI Deployment Company, a new business unit focused on helping organizations deploy AI systems into their operations.

The company embeds so-called Forward Deployed Engineers (FDEs) directly into client organizations. These engineers work with staff to identify use cases, redesign workflows, and build production AI systems connected to the client’s data, tools, and processes.
A typical engagement starts with an assessment of where AI can add value, followed by selecting a small number of priority workflows. FDEs then design, build, test, and deploy systems inside the organization.
“The rapid advances of models like GPT-5.5 show how quickly AI capabilities are evolving, often faster than most businesses can fully operationalize today. The next phase of enterprise AI will therefore not just be defined by intelligence, but by who can actually deploy it at scale. We’re now well past experimentation. The challenge in front of us is getting AI embedded deeply into the workflows that power businesses, with the engineering, operational rigor, and change management required to make it stick.”
Sarah Friar, OpenAI CFO
Tomoro acquisition
In connection with the launch, OpenAI has agreed to acquire Tomoro, an AI consulting and engineering firm. The deal brings approximately 150 FDEs and deployment specialists to the new company from day one. Tomoro has previously worked with Tesco, Virgin Atlantic, and Supercell. The acquisition is subject to regulatory approval and is expected to close in the coming months.
Funding and ownership
The OpenAI Deployment Company launches with over $4 billion in initial investment. It is majority-owned and controlled by OpenAI. Nineteen firms have committed as partners, including:
- Lead: TPG
- Co-lead founding partners: Advent, Bain Capital, Brookfield
- Founding partners: B Capital, BBVA, Emergence Capital, Goanna, Goldman Sachs, SoftBank Corp., Warburg Pincus, WCAS
- Consulting and systems integration investors: Bain & Company, Capgemini, McKinsey & Company
The investment will be used to scale operations and acquire additional firms.
“AI is becoming capable of doing increasingly meaningful work inside organizations. The challenge now is helping companies integrate these systems into the infrastructure and workflows that power their businesses. DeployCo is designed to help organizations bridge that gap and turn AI capability into real operational impact.”
Denise Dresser, Chief Revenue Officer at OpenAI
