Indian travellers can now pay in Malaysia just as easily as they do back home, as Razorpay and NPCI International have joined forces to bring India’s UPI payment system to Malaysian merchants

Global payment solutions company Razorpay and NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) have announced a strategic collaboration to enable acceptance of India’s real-time payments infrastructure, the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), for Indian travellers in Malaysia, with funds settled locally in Malaysian ringgit.
Under the agreement, Malaysian merchants using services of Razorpay’s local entity will be able to accept payments from Indian users via UPI-enabled apps, providing a seamless, card-free checkout experience. The initiative is expected to boost spending by Indian visitors to Malaysia, who in 2024 numbered over one million and contributed approximately RM 6.11 billion in revenue — a 71.7% increase year-on-year.
Kevin Lee, Country Head and CEO of Razorpay Curlec, said the collaboration would give Indian travellers in Malaysia the same level of payment convenience they enjoy at home, while also opening new business opportunities for Malaysian merchants.
Ritesh Shukla, CEO of NIPL, added that extending UPI’s reach would help support Malaysia’s commerce ecosystem and strengthen cross-border connectivity for digital payments.
For 2025, Malaysia is targeting 1.5 million Indian tourists, as the number of visitors from India has been growing at double-digit rates for the last few years.
With Malaysia actively promoting digital payments and pursuing a cash-light economy, the new UPI-enabled channel aligns with national ambitions for broader financial inclusion and smoother tourist spending.
