Starling Bank Launches UK’s First Agentic AI Tool for Personal Finance Management

UK digital lender Starling Bank has rolled out what it describes as the country’s first agentic AI-powered personal finance assistant, marking a significant step toward autonomous banking.

Starling Bank Launches UK’s First Agentic AI Tool for Personal Finance Management

The new in-app feature, known as “Starling Assistant,” moves beyond traditional chatbot functionality by actively managing customers’ finances on their behalf. Using natural language and voice prompts, the assistant can analyse spending, set savings goals, organise bill payments, and provide tailored financial insights within the bank’s mobile app.

Unlike earlier AI tools that focused primarily on answering queries, the agentic model enables the system to take action. Customers can issue simple instructions, such as asking the assistant to create a savings plan or review monthly expenses, and the AI will execute tasks automatically.

Starling’s Group Chief Information Officer, Harriet Rees, described the rollout as the beginning of a “new era of banking,” where customers can rely on AI to build better financial habits and simplify money management.

The assistant builds on several AI-driven features the bank introduced over the past year, including tools for analysing spending behaviour and detecting potential scams. By consolidating these capabilities into a single interface, Starling aims to create a unified, conversational banking experience.

Notably, the tool also incorporates security-focused features such as scam detection and support for vulnerable users, highlighting how AI is increasingly being used not only for convenience but also for financial protection and inclusion.

The move comes as UK regulators and lawmakers intensify scrutiny of AI in financial services, balancing innovation with concerns around consumer protection, transparency, and risk management. At the same time, adoption is accelerating, with forecasts suggesting a significant share of financial institutions will deploy AI agents by 2026.

Although not fully possessing agentic autonomy, Starling’s fellow financial institutions, NatWest and Lloyds, both have, or are rolling out, AI assistants that can answer banking questions or help with money management.
