Waymo, the autonomous-vehicle subsidiary of Alphabet, announced that it is offering fully driverless robotaxi rides on U.S. freeways for the first time.
The Waymo robotaxi expansion covers select freeway corridors in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Phoenix, where Waymo vehicles will travel without a human safety driver behind the wheel.
According to the company, riders who opt in will benefit from “quicker, smoother, and more efficient” trips when freeway routing is meaningfully faster. Waymo also said it has developed new protocols in partnership with highway patrol and safety agencies to manage the added risks of high-speed merging and exits on highways.
This move signals a major milestone in the autonomous mobility race. By enabling driverless operations on high-speed road systems, Waymo is positioning itself as a leader in scaling fully autonomous ride-hailing services from city streets to highways.
Analysts cautiously view this as a transition from controlled environments to broader real-world deployment. The company’s existing fleet, already operating in multiple U.S. markets, will now wedge into terrains that were previously considered too challenging, even for advanced driver-assist systems. The service is initially available only to early access users, with broader rollout details and pricing to follow.
Not all robotaxi initiatives have fared so smoothly. For instance, Cruise (a subsidiary of General Motors) suspended all driverless operations in late 2023 after a high-profile accident and regulatory action in San Francisco. Meanwhile, Tesla’s much-touted robotaxi service has been criticised for relying on a human monitor and operating at lower autonomy levels, raising doubts about its scalability.
These industry setbacks demonstrate the regulatory, safety and technical hurdles that remain even for established players, and highlight why Waymo’s freeway expansion is being watched closely.
