Wema Bank, an innovative lender based in Nigeria, has launched the fifth edition of its flagship capacity-building programme for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the country. Wema Bank’s SME Business School 5.0. will take place between May 22-26 in Benin.

The Wema initiative aims to help local SME owners in Nigeria get the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in business. The programme includes training and lectures on business management, leadership and entrepreneurship, held by subject matter experts and experienced entrepreneurs.

With this project, Wema Bank addresses the knowledge gap that prevents most SMEs from succeeding. Although small businesses are the backbone of the Nigerian economy, the absence of necessary skills often leads to poor business structure and management.

The educational initiative started only in 2021, but there have already been conducted four successful editions of the programme in Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt. Each course attracted over 500 SME business owners and entrepreneurs who got the chance to participate without any admission fees. The SMEs are typically selected through a call for applications and direct nominations.
