Google has announced it will build a subsea cable with landing points in New York, the US, in Bude, the UK, and Bilbao, Spain.

The cable, named after computer scientist Grace Hopper, will be equipped with 16 fiber pairs, a significant upgrade to the internet infrastructure connecting the US with Europe.

Grace Hopper will incorporate novel optical fiber switching that will increase reliability in global communications. That would allow Google to better move traffic around outages.

According to the report, the rollout is planned for 2022. The cable will be built by SubCom, a New Jersey-based subsea cable provider.

We’ve reported that Deutsche Bank and Google Cloud will form a strategic partnership aimed to redefine how the bank develops and offers its financial services.
