According to research conducted by Accenture, there is a significant gap between the way leaders and employees view equality progress in their organizations.

The survey unveiled that 77% of women and 67% of men think it is essential to develop workplace culture. At the same time, 68% of leaders believe an inclusive workplace culture is vital to the success of their business.

However, a perception gap does exist. The research found that 68% of leaders feel they create empowering environments where people have a sense of belonging, meanwhile only 36% of employees agree with that.

In addition to that, the proportion of employees who don’t feel included in their organizations is 10x higher than leaders believe, with 20% vs 2%, respectively.

The research also discovered that most leaders rank diversity and workplace culture low on their list of top organizational priorities. For instance, nearly three-quarters of leaders ranked financial performance (76%) and brand recognition and quality (72%) at the top of their list. At the same time, only 34% of leaders ranked diversity and 21% ranked culture at the top.

Creating a culture of equality must be at the top of the business agenda. It starts with the belief that diversity is not only the right thing to do but a business imperative that is treated the same as any other strategic priority. When a strong, equal workplace culture is prioritized, everyone benefits — and as a result, organizations unlock greater innovation and growth
