Horst Görtz Institute for IT Security conducted research explaining which PINs are safer for users. The study found that despite people prefer certain combinations, such PINs as 123456 and 654321 are used more frequently.

Since the launch of iOS 9, Apple banned users from using weak numbers, which have been included in the blacklist, declining them automatically during the PIN launching process.

During the research, the team had access to several of these blacklists, including Apple’s four-digit and six-digit list. As a result, they found out that six-digit PINs aren’t better than four-digit PINs.

However, due to the fact manufacturers limit the number of PIN unlocking attempts, a conscientiously chosen four-digit PIN is safe enough, the study unveiled.
