Contactless corridors will be implemented in the UK, according to the official statement. This comes as the UK government looks to set up the corridors at the country’s entry points, including airports. This will make it easy for passengers to verify their identity without using passports.

The contactless passage plan will use app-based systems that are biometric-enabled. It also lays out the use of fingerprint and facial recognition for non-UK citizens looking to enter the country. Alongside a group of academics, the Home Office is working to identify opportunities and trends in the space.

The contactless corridors plan is part of an investment in border technology, biometrics, and processes. The result? A border that is fully digitally equipped for end-to-end customer processes. This will ease the process of legitimate customers passing the border and enhance security.

People who have electronic permission will not be required to produce physical proof. The system intends to increase automation and ensure that UK travelers pass through automated identity gates, contactless corridors, and security checks.

This comes after the trial of the use of smart border technology which is based on iris and face recognition in borders crossing in the UAE and the UK.

This is not the initial biometric path globally. Dubai International Airport launched a biometric path in October 2020. This uses iris and facial recognition to allow passengers to check-in, complete and pass through boarding gates without the use of physical documents. In June 2020, Eurostar also started the use of biometrics and replaced physical tickets.

We’ve reported that EU Digital Covid Certificate goes live.
