A snapshot of the EU crypto landscape ahead of the MiCA deadline shows that a large group of firms is already operating under national registrations expected to transition into MiCA compliance frameworks by July 1, 2026, or even earlier (in certain jurisdictions) based on the official registers updated as of May 29.

As transitional period for MiCA regulation compliance ends in less than a month, users worry about their crypto assets and whether the service they use is sticking to new rules. Across 22 EU/EEA jurisdictions, the register includes roughly 200 licensed entities, spanning exchanges, banks, custodians, payment providers, and trading infrastructure firms.
The most active jurisdiction by far is Germany, where national regulator BaFin lists a dense ecosystem of institutions bridging traditional finance and digital assets. This includes infrastructure providers such as Boerse Stuttgart Digital Custody, trading firms like Tradias, and established financial institutions such as Deutsche WertpapierService Bank (dwpbank) and DZ Bank. Germany’s register also includes retail-facing platforms such as Trade Republic and custody specialists like BitGo Europe.
A similarly active hub is the Netherlands, where the ecosystem includes trading venues and crypto brokers such as Bitvavo, Bitpanda, and infrastructure providers like Zerohash Europe and MoonPay Europe. The Dutch register also features institutional players like ClearBank Europe.
In France, the list is more institutionally anchored, with major regulated entities such as Société Générale Forge and custody and asset managers like CoinShares Asset Management and Coinhouse. Stablecoin infrastructure also appears via Circle.
Cyprus register shows a strong retail trading presence, including global platforms such as eToro, Trading 212, and Capital.com, alongside fintech-linked entrants like Revolut.
Meanwhile, Malta remains a key crypto hub in Southern Europe, with exchanges and Web3 platforms such as OKX, Crypto.com, and Gemini listed under its regulator.
Regional diversity across the EU MiCA registers
Beyond the major hubs, several countries show more specialized ecosystems:
- In Spain, traditional banks and fintechs such as BBVA and CaixaBank sit alongside crypto-native firms like Bit2Me.
- In Ireland, infrastructure and payments players dominate, including Kraken (through its EU entities), CoinJar, and payments providers like Skrill and Neteller.
- In the Nordics, Sweden and Finland remain comparatively smaller, with firms such as Safello and Coinmotion leading limited national participation.
The distribution highlights certain imbalance. Thus, Germany dominates in depth and breadth of licensees, followed by the Netherlands, France, and Cyprus. In contrast, countries like Italy and Sweden show far fewer locally registered entities, suggesting either slower domestic licensing activity or a preference by firms to passport services from other EU jurisdictions. At the same time, the jurisdiction of licensing doesn’t really matter, since if a crypto-asset service provider (CASP) is authorized in one EU country, it can “passport” its services to other EU/EEA states to serve clients across borders without applying for separate licenses in each country.
