New Forage partnership will simplify acceptance of government food benefits for grocery, convenience, and select food sellers on Adyen’s platform.
Adyen and Forage have announced a strategic collaboration to enable SNAP EBT payments for merchants using Adyen’s commerce platform in the United States, offering a streamlined path for retailers to accept benefits used by millions of Americans.
Forage, a mission-driven payments technology company and one of the fastest-growing USDA-approved processors of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) payments, will integrate its SNAP-specific payment capabilities directly into Adyen’s unified platform. This integration aims to reduce complexity for retailers while expanding food access for the roughly 42 million SNAP recipients who rely on these benefits to purchase groceries.
SNAP EBT is a federal assistance program administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture that allows low-income households to use government-issued benefits to buy eligible food items at authorized retailers. It supports consumers with essential food purchases, both in-store and increasingly online, and is a critical payment method within the U.S. retail food ecosystem.
Under the new partnership, merchants using Adyen in the U.S. can enable SNAP EBT as a payment method with minimal implementation hurdles, thanks to features such as secure PIN entry, mixed-basket handling (where eligible and non-eligible items are purchased together), and EBT-specific refund support. The first retailers are expected to begin rolling out the capability in early 2026.
Adyen’s payments technology is used by thousands of merchants globally, spanning online, in-store, and unified commerce environments, and includes a significant footprint in the United States. Data on Adyen usage indicates that hundreds of e-commerce sites in the U.S. leverage its solutions, with the broader platform supporting merchants across diverse sectors and geographies.
The integration is poised to benefit a range of retailer types, particularly grocery stores and supermarkets, which form the core of SNAP purchasing. It also supports online grocery platforms and delivery services, where SNAP benefits are used increasingly, and convenience stores or smaller food retailers that meet USDA stocking requirements and seek to expand payment options. While traditional restaurants generally aren’t eligible to accept SNAP EBT, some operators participating in limited Restaurant Meal Programs could also take advantage of the integration where applicable.
By combining Forage’s specialized SNAP EBT payment processing with Adyen’s wide-ranging payments infrastructure, the partnership aims to make compliance and acceptance easier for merchants while extending payment choice and access to SNAP customers, aligning with broader trends toward digital food benefit use and inclusive retail payment experiences.
