The South Korean companies Rebellions Inc. and Sapeon Korea Inc., which specialize in carrying out activities in the chip manufacturing sector necessary for training and ensuring the subsequent operation of artificial intelligence systems, have signed a final merger agreement.
The statement about the signed agreement between the mentioned makers of microcircuits was made last Sunday, August 18. It is worth noting that both companies are private.
Talks on a merger between two South Korean manufacturers of chips for artificial intelligence systems became known in June. It is worth noting that this deal can be interpreted as a move made within the framework of a set of measures aimed at realizing Seoul’s aspirations to strengthen its position in the global technology market, the most important segment of which is currently machine intelligence. Artificial intelligence is gradually becoming what can be called the main technology at the present stage of the material development of human civilization. Against this background, the chips necessary for the functioning of AI systems are a strategically important product.
South Korea’s actions signal a desire to challenge world leaders in the area of microcircuits of artificial intelligence. In this case, the main goal is to improve competitiveness in a kind of market competition with Nvidia, one of the world leaders in the machine intelligence industry.
Sapeon’s shareholders are South Korea’s largest telecommunications company SK Telecom and the world’s second-largest memory chip manufacturer SK Hynix. Rebellions in July received $15 million in funding from Wa’ed Ventures, a Saudi Aramco venture capital unit. The company said that the mentioned financing increased the total investment in the brand to more than $225 million.
