Airwallex, a global financial and payments platform for businesses, has officially expanded into Germany as part of its broader European growth strategy, committing €31 million in investment over the next five years to establish local operations and support business customers in the region.

The German expansion includes the establishment of a Berlin office and a dedicated local team, with plans to grow staffing to support services targeted at small and medium‑sized enterprises (SMEs) and larger corporates seeking cross‑border financial infrastructure. Airwallex provides business accounts, international transfers, multi‑currency account management and online payment processing, and its presence in Germany positions the company to compete with established regional players.
Tom Sellin, who leads Airwallex’s DACH (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) expansion, said the German market presents a significant opportunity: while competition is high and the payments landscape is not yet fully digitalised, the scale and export‑driven nature of the German economy create demand for faster, more efficient cross‑border payment solutions. Airwallex reports that it currently processes a large proportion of transactions instantly and supports local account services in international markets.
Under its European e‑money licence, granted in the Netherlands in 2021, Airwallex can operate across the European Economic Area (EEA), including Germany. One of its early customers in the German market is Moss, a fintech focused on corporate credit cards and expense management for SMEs.
In addition to direct business banking and payments services, Airwallex’s expansion aligns with developments in the regional payments ecosystem, including the rollout of the Wero digital wallet — a pan‑European account‑to‑account (A2A) payment solution developed by the European Payments Initiative (EPI). Wero is expected to support e‑commerce payments in Germany from late 2025 and beyond, complementing Airwallex’s offerings by giving merchants additional local payment options through its platform.
The investment reflects Airwallex’s strategic prioritisation of Europe following years of growth in Asia‑Pacific and the Americas. According to industry sources, the company has raised significant funding and achieved strong recurring revenue performance, underlining its capacity to scale services and compete with legacy and digital‑first providers across global markets.
Airwallex’s German launch will support businesses seeking local financial infrastructure and global connectivity, offering tools to send and receive international payments, hold and convert multiple currencies and integrate payment solutions into broader financial operations. The company’s investment in local capacity aims to accelerate adoption among exporters, e‑commerce firms and international businesses operating within and beyond Germany.
