Global payments and financial platform Airwallex has expanded its treasury management capabilities with a new feature for U.S. customers that allows businesses to earn yield on idle balances held within its payments infrastructure.

The new Airwallex Yield product is designed to help companies generate returns on funds stored in their payment accounts without moving money out of their operational workflows. The launch reflects growing demand among businesses for integrated financial tools that combine payments, liquidity management, and treasury functions inside a single platform.
With the new functionality, U.S. customers can place available balances into interest-generating accounts directly within the Airwallex platform. The funds remain accessible for payments, transfers, and operational use while earning returns.
Key features of the offering include:
- The ability to earn yield on idle balances held in Airwallex business accounts
- Flexible access to funds, allowing companies to move money back into operational accounts when needed
- Integration with cross-border payments and global treasury tools already offered by the platform
- A simplified way for companies to manage liquidity without opening separate investment accounts
The feature is aimed primarily at technology companies, global startups, and international businesses that frequently hold multi-currency balances for cross-border payments.
By embedding yield generation directly into the payments stack, Airwallex is seeking to turn operational accounts into tools for both payments execution and short-term treasury management.
Many companies keep large cash balances in payment platforms to manage international operations, supplier payments, and payroll. Traditionally, these funds generated little or no return. However, as interest rates rose globally in recent years, businesses have increasingly looked for ways to earn returns on operational liquidity without sacrificing access to capital. This has led to a new wave of financial infrastructure products that integrate cash management directly into payments platforms.
For companies operating globally, the ability to manage payments, hold funds, and earn yield in the same environment can reduce the need for separate banking or treasury systems.
Airwallex’s move follows a broader shift among fintech platforms toward offering embedded yield and treasury management features. Companies such as Stripe, Brex, and Mercury have launched similar products that allow businesses to earn returns on stored balances through money market funds or partner banks.
Traditional financial institutions are also moving into the space. Banks, including JPMorgan Chase and Citigroup, have expanded digital treasury tools that allow corporate clients to automatically sweep excess cash into interest-bearing accounts. At the same time, most of these services do not present a guaranteed yield‑earning balance product, rather a tool to move funds to interest accumulation accounts more seamlessly, so here’s where Airwallex’s new product sets itself apart.
