American Express expands its presence in the competitive British card market, as Amex Cardmembers can now use their Card at the UK’s leading self-storage brand.
American Express and Big Yellow Self Storage have signed a new agreement enabling Amex cards to be accepted as a payment method both in-store and online at the UK’s leading self-storage company.
Big Yellow opened its first store in Richmond, London, in May 1999, and 26 years later, has grown to a network of 111 stores nationwide, including 23 branded as Armadillo Self Storage. As well as being used by domestic customers, Big Yellow provides a helping hand to many businesses, large and small, by offering flexible and secure storage space.
Under the new agreement, Amex Cardmembers can now pay for storage and packing materials using their Amex Card. Exclusive offers and discounts for spending with Big Yellow will also be available for Cardmembers in the coming weeks.
American Express has been present in the UK for more than 60 years, launching its first pound‑sterling charge card in 1963. Since then, it has evolved from a premium charge-card provider to offering a broad range of products, including credit cards, rewards programs, and business solutions.
Today, Amex is accepted at more places than ever in the UK, including major supermarkets, high street retailers, and hundreds of thousands of small businesses. Its Cardmembers are known for higher spending and strong loyalty, making Amex acceptance an attractive option for merchants across sectors.
Dan Edelman, UK General Manager, Merchant Services at American Express, noted that the acceptance of American Express at Big Yellow, a leading player in the fast-growing storage sector, would give both Consumer and Business Cardmembers greater flexibility when spending and further strengthen merchant coverage nationwide, which had tripled since 2021.
The growth is a result of an active expansion strategy Amex has adopted in recent years. The card issuer has signed on a number of high‑profile retailers lately, including Decathlon, Screwfix, Footasylum, and even convenience chains like McColl’s.
Amex also struck a major deal with Worldpay to make it easier for small and medium‑sized UK merchants to accept its cards, providing simpler onboarding, single settlement processes, and easier reconciliation.
Sabina Patel-Jhanji, Partnerships UK at Big Yellow Self Storage, explained that Big Yellow was the UK’s favourite choice for secure, modern storage, serving homes and businesses across the country. She highlighted that the company’s stores offered easy access, flexibility, and reliable service, and she confirmed that the acceptance of American Express across all 111 stores and the online Box Shop would provide even more choice for customers.
American Express provides Cardmembers with a range of benefits, including cashback, Membership Rewards points, exclusive Amex Offers from national brands, and more. By expanding acceptance to Big Yellow, Cardmembers gain even greater opportunities to earn rewards while paying with Amex at trusted UK businesses.
