ChatGPT Comes to iOS, iPadOS, and macOS

OpenAI officially announced that ChatGPT capabilities will be integrated into experiences within iOS, iPadOS, and macOS later this year.

ChatGPT Comes to iOS, iPadOS, and macOS

The announcement was shared at Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference 2024 on June 10. ChatGPT integration into Apple’s operating systems is part of Apple Intelligence, the new personal intelligence system for iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

Apple Intelligence will launch in a beta version this fall. It combines OpenAI’s generative AI capabilities with innovative Writing Tools and Siri voice assistance. The enhanced language capabilities in the new OS enable users to rewrite, proofread, and summarize texts in Mail, Notes, Pages, and third-party apps. Apple Intelligence also powers image creation capabilities, allowing to create animation, illustrations or sketches.

The new useful AI-powered features include Smart Reply in Mail. It quickly drafts an email response with all the right details and relevant selections. Apple’s new ‘Genmoji’ feature lets users create personalized emojis, while a rough sketch can be turned into an image that complements your notes with Image Wand. With the help of the Reduce Interruptions feature, Apple notifications will get a new focus, distinguishing the ones that might need immediate attention.

ChatGPT will empower a few main functions within the Apple Intelligence suite. The tool will be used for text and image analysis. It will also help users generate content and images. When one asks Siri a question, the virtual assistant will ask if it should redirect the request to ChatGPT, along with any documents or photos. Siri then presents the answer directly without switching between different tools.

The AI firm assures that requests to ChatGPT within Siri and Writing Tools will not be stored by OpenAI, and users’ IP addresses are obscured. Besides, OpenAI customers can connect their ChatGPT account to Apple Intelligence so that their data preferences will apply under ChatGPT’s policies.

Users can access ChatGPT integration for free without creating an account, while existing ChatGPT subscribers can connect their accounts and access paid features directly from Apple’s iOS, iPadOS, and macOS experiences.

“We’re excited to partner with Apple to bring ChatGPT to their users in a new way. Apple shares our commitment to safety and innovation, and this partnership aligns with OpenAI’s mission to make advanced AI accessible to everyone. Together with Apple, we’re making it easier for people to benefit from what AI can offer.”

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI

At the same conference, Apple also introduced new AirPods software, additional health-related features for the Apple Watch, a calculator app on the iPad, and visionOS 2, the latest version of its Vision Pro mixed reality headset software.
