OpenAI’s new dynamic visual feature lets 140 million weekly users manipulate real-time math equations and science graphs, turning ChatGPT from an answer machine into an interactive learning lab.

OpenAI has launched a significant upgrade to ChatGPT that transforms how students and learners interact with complex subjects. The company rolled out dynamic visual explanations on March 10, 2026 — a feature that replaces static text answers with live, manipulable visual modules covering more than 70 math and science topics. Nicholas Turley, OpenAI’s head of product for ChatGPT, shared the announcement directly on LinkedIn, describing it as a shift from explaining concepts to letting users experience them hands-on.
The mechanic of the new feature is straightforward but powerful. Ask ChatGPT a question like “What is the Pythagorean theorem?” or “How does Ohm’s law work?” and the chatbot now responds with both a text explanation and an interactive visual module embedded directly in the conversation. Users can drag sliders, adjust variables, and watch graphs and equations update in real time.
For example, when exploring the Pythagorean theorem, you can adjust the lengths of a triangle’s sides and instantly see the hypotenuse recalculate. The same logic applies across topics including compound interest, exponential decay, kinetic energy, Coulomb’s law, lens equations, linear equations, and Hooke’s law — all of which are live at launch. The goal, according to OpenAI, is to make abstract formulas tangible and more visualised.
Unlike many OpenAI upgrades that debut as paid-tier exclusives, this one is available immediately to all logged-in ChatGPT users globally, across every plan including the free tier. OpenAI confirmed the rollout began March 10, 2026, with no regional restrictions announced at launch.
The decision to make the feature universally free is notable given that more than 140 million people already use ChatGPT weekly for math and science assistance, according to OpenAI’s own data. The company cited a Gallup survey noting that more than half of U.S. adults identify math as a subject they struggle with, framing this rollout as a direct response to a documented learning gap.
Interactive visual explanations build on ChatGPT’s Study Mode, launched last summer, which walks users through problems step by step using a Socratic approach rather than handing out direct answers. ChatGPT also includes QuizGPT-style tools that let learners create flashcard sets and be quizzed on any subject before exams. The three features together form a more coherent educational layer on top of the chatbot.
OpenAI framed the launch as “just the beginning,” committing to expanding interactive learning into additional subjects over time. The company also said it will continue researching AI’s effect on educational outcomes through its NextGenAI initiative and the OpenAI Learning Lab, with plans to publish findings and develop the tools accordingly.
OpenAI is not first to this idea. Google’s Gemini launched a comparable interactive diagrams feature in November 2025, and AI-powered learning tools have been a growing focus across the industry. But ChatGPT’s scale, with 140 million weekly STEM users, gives this rollout an outsized reach compared to most competitor launches.
Dynamic visual explanations represent a meaningful shift in what AI tutoring looks like. Rather than retrieving facts on demand, ChatGPT now invites users to probe, adjust, and discover — a pedagogical model closer to a laboratory than a search engine. Whether it translates to measurably better learning outcomes is a question OpenAI says it intends to study. What’s already clear is the direction: AI is moving from giving answers to building understanding.
