NET dollar digital currency will be specifically designed by Cloudflare to support the emerging AI-to-AI agent payment model which is actively promoted by fintech players worldwide.
Cloudflare, Inc. has announced plans to launch NET Dollar, a U.S. dollar-backed stablecoin designed for fast and secure online payments.
The company positions this initiative as part of the shift toward an “agentic web”, where artificial intelligence (AI) agents can handle tasks and make payments on behalf of users, such as booking travel or ordering groceries.
As AI takes on more responsibility in everyday digital interactions, the way money moves online will also need to adapt. Traditional methods like card payments or bank transfers are often too slow or cumbersome for instant, automated transactions. Stablecoins, digital tokens tied to a national currency, offer a potential solution by providing speed, global reach, and reliability.
Cloudflare argues that this could support a new Internet business model based on microtransactions and pay-per-use payments, rather than relying mainly on advertising. For example, AI agents could pay for services instantly, creators could receive direct compensation for original content, and developers could monetize applications in smaller, automated increments.
The company says its global network infrastructure will help make NET Dollar usable across borders and time zones, with transparent and verifiable transactions. To encourage interoperability, Cloudflare is also contributing to open standards like the Agent Payments Protocol and x402, which are aimed at simplifying how payments flow between different systems online.
NET Dollar is being introduced as part of a broader effort to prepare Internet payments for a future where AI agents interact and transact automatically, requiring money that moves as quickly as data does today. Meanwhile, many major fintech and big tech companies are working on creating a proper agentic AI architecture and suitable payment protocols to support the emerging agentic economy.
