Deutsche Bank and its subsidiary Postbank have rolled out the full functionality of the Wero digital payments platform, offering real-time, cross-border payments and online checkout capabilities to millions of customers.

Deutsche Bank and Postbank have officially made the Wero digital payments app available with full functionality to their customers, marking a key advancement in Europe’s efforts to build a sovereign, modern payment ecosystem. The rollout means users of both banks can now send and receive money in real time across European countries and pay for goods in participating online shops using a mobile platform linked directly to their bank accounts.
The expanded launch follows an earlier phase in which Postbank customers were able to make person-to-person transfers via Wero as of November 2024, but were not yet able to make e-commerce payments. With the December 2025 rollout, both Deutsche Bank and Postbank clients can now take advantage of the app’s full suite of features.
Wero, developed by the European Payments Initiative (EPI), is designed to become a pan-European alternative to global digital wallets and card networks. The platform enables users to send funds instantly, without entering IBAN or BIC details, by linking the wallet directly to their existing accounts at participating banks, including Deutsche Bank and Postbank.
Beyond person-to-person transfers, Wero has already begun rolling out payments at online merchants and is expected to soon support subscriptions, in-store payments, and additional services such as “Buy Now, Pay Later,” loyalty programme integration, and shared expense management.
Together, Deutsche Bank and Postbank serve around 19 million customers in Germany, all of whom now have access to Wero’s expanded capabilities, provided they have online banking. The move positions the banks as early adopters of the emerging European payment standard and reinforces their roles in supporting digital finance innovation across the region.
From a strategic standpoint, the rollout signals a major push toward payment sovereign independence for Europe. By reducing reliance on non-European card networks and foreign digital wallets, Wero aims to unify fragmented payment landscapes and make domestic digital payments faster, simpler, and more integrated with consumers’ daily banking.
In addition to retail functionality, Deutsche Bank is facilitating merchant and fintech integration of Wero, extending its usability beyond private transfers and e-commerce to broader real-world acceptance. As the EPI continues to onboard additional financial institutions and expand service offerings, Deutsche Bank and Postbank’s deployment of Wero underscores a shift toward a more cohesive, European-centric payment experience.
