Google Unveils New AI Features, Opens Bard for General Public

Several crucial technology updates were announced on May 10 at Google I/O 2023. One of the most exciting news is that Google’s generative AI chatbot Bard has gotten new features and become open for experiments to people from over 180 countries and territories.

In the initial phases of testing, a limited number of customers from the US and the UK had an opportunity to experiment with generative AI capabilities and leave their feedback. Based on the experiential knowledge, the product has been improved with new attributes.

These include adding visuals to both textual prompts and responses with the help of Google Lens, as well as integrating the capabilities of various Google apps and services (Docs, Drive, Gmail, Maps etc) and third-party apps (e.g. Adobe Firefly, Adobe Express) into the Bard experience.

As for the coding capabilities, which have become one of the most popular use cases for Bard, the company has added enhanced source citations, a dark theme for the eyes’ comfort and the ability to export and run code with its partner Replit, starting with Python.

Other innovations in Google’s AI stack presuppose reimagining all the corporate core products, including Search. To summarize the updates,

  • Gmail received a ‘Help Me Write’ feature that offers complete mail drafts based on short prompts.
  • Google Maps will get an AI-enabled ‘Immersive View for routes’ that creates a high-fidelity representation of locations for customers to compare not only the length of routes but also the scenery along the road. The feature will launch in 15 cities by the end of the year, including London, New York, Tokyo and San Francisco.
  • Google Photos receives a new Magic Editor experience able to make complex edits using a combination of AI techniques, including generative AI.
  • The company introduced an advanced AI foundation language model – PaLM 2 – with improved multilingual, reasoning and coding capabilities. The language model has also got its specific fine-tuned versions: Sec-PaLM, dedicated to security use cases, and Med-PaLM 2, curated using medical knowledge.
  • Duet AI in Google Workspace will now provide tools to generate images from text descriptions in Slides and Meet, create custom plans in Sheets, and more.
  • Google also introduced Labs to preview some of the new experiences across Workspace and other products.
  • The first generative experience customers will be able to test in Labs is AI-enhanced Google Search.
  • For gamers, the company prepared Project Gameface, a new open-source hands-free AI-powered gaming mouse that allows users to control a computer’s cursor using their head movement and facial gestures.
  • Finally, Google is deeply investing in AI responsibility, aiming to add watermarking and metadata features to its AI-generated content.
