Illicit Crypto Activity Hits Record Lows as Binance Maintains Industry-Leading Compliance

New data from Chainalysis and TRM Labs reveals that illicit activity on centralised cryptocurrency exchanges has dropped to historic lows, marking a turning point in the sector’s maturity.

Illicit Crypto Activity Hits Record Lows as Binance Maintains Industry-Leading Compliance

As of June 2025, the seven largest exchanges reported that only 0.018–0.023% of total transaction volume was linked to illicit addresses, a dramatic decrease from levels observed two years ago. This decline suggests that improved monitoring, compliance, and enforcement are having a measurable impact across the crypto ecosystem.

Among major exchanges, Binance stands out for maintaining the lowest exposure to illicit activity despite processing daily volumes comparable to the combined throughput of its six closest peers. Chainalysis reports that just 0.007% of Binance’s June 2025 transactions touched wallets linked to illicit behavior, 2.5 times lower than the average for other top exchanges. TRM Labs similarly notes Binance’s direct exposure at 0.016%, roughly 30% below the industry average. These results reflect the exchange’s combination of deep liquidity and rigorous compliance controls.

“Direct exposure” refers to the portion of an exchange’s activity that interacts with wallets involved in confirmed illicit conduct, such as crypto scams, hacks, or sanctions violations. Low exposure indicates that suspicious transactions are being detected, blocked, and reported before they circulate further. While crypto often faces scrutiny over illicit finance, traditional channels still dwarf it, with trillions laundered annually through banks and fiat systems, according to NASDAQ, the UN, and IMF.

From January 2023 to June 2025, Binance reduced illicit exposure by 96–98%, outperforming peers even as it scaled to process more than $90 billion daily across 217 million trades. The exchange attributes this performance to several factors. A large compliance team of over 1,280 specialists, handling risk, investigations, and monitoring, works alongside law enforcement globally.

Binance also participates in industry initiatives such as the Beacon Network and the T3+ program with TRON, Tether, and TRM Labs, enabling the real-time freezing and recovery of illicit funds. Advanced AI-powered monitoring further enhances detection accuracy while reducing false positives.

These figures highlight a broader transformation within cryptocurrency markets. Enhanced transparency, technological innovation, and strengthened regulatory cooperation are contributing to an environment where illicit activity represents only a tiny fraction of overall transactions. Binance’s ability to maintain industry-leading compliance while operating at immense scale illustrates that responsible growth and user protection can progress hand in hand.

As adoption of digital assets continues to expand, maintaining these standards will remain critical. Sustaining progress will require continued collaboration, innovative monitoring tools, and an ongoing commitment to transparency. For the industry, the message is clear: cryptocurrency is becoming cleaner, safer, and more traceable than ever, and leading platforms like Binance are setting the benchmark for compliance in a rapidly evolving market.
