Combining Mastercard global network with Zenith nationwide branch and digital footprint gives the Essential Debit Card product broad merchant acceptance and the ability to work across online channels. That mix helps co-branded cards compete with other domestic card schemes and fintech rails.

Mastercard and Zenith Bank have launched the Essential Debit Card, a simplified, low-cost debit solution designed to bring secure digital payments to underserved Nigerians. The card is available as a physical or virtual option and is explicitly aimed at low-income earners and other people who face barriers to formal banking.
Users who previously relied on cash or informal payment options could leverage this simple, affordable debit product seamlessly due to Mastercard’s “Essential” framework, which is explicitly designed to lower issuance costs and simplify onboarding so banks can reach higher-potential, underserved segments without high fees or complex requirements.
At present, Nigeria’s digital payments market is expanding fast. The Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) reported that electronic payment transactions reached ₦1.08 quadrillion in 2024, roughly an 80% jump from ₦600 trillion in 2023, and point-of-sale activity also rose sharply, underscoring growing acceptance of electronic channels. That momentum makes the timing of a simple, affordable debit product especially relevant.
Meanwhile, debit-card ownership in Nigeria is significant but still far from universal. According to the World Bank’s earlier estimations and local market summaries, roughly a third of adults in the country held a debit card in recent years (about 35% in 2021). At the same time, formal financial inclusion has improved to about 64% in 2023, which means a growing pool of banked customers in Nigeria can now be reached with card products.
For those already banked customers, a large share do hold ATM/debit cards, but gaps remain in affordability, transparency, and digital readiness for lower-income groups and some regions.
