Meta Tests Experiential Retail to Sell Smart Glasses

The temporary brick-and-mortar store at 8600 Melrose Avenue includes an artificial intelligence wall that allows users to test a smart AI assistant on glasses. There is also a so-called immersion room in this store, where visitors can capture themselves on the beach generated by artificial intelligence. Moreover, users are allowed to customize eyeglass cases while they shop. The relevant information was published on the Meta blog.

The pop-up store in Los Angeles is one of three types of experiential first-party retail that are being tested as part of the Meta Lab project. These include a pure pop-up that was tested at Meta’s Connect 2024 event, the limited-time test of a flagship store in Los Angeles, and a shop-in-shop that will be tested in Phoenix in January.

The mentioned stages of the project will become a kind of platform for the future efforts of the technology giant in the area of experimental first-party retail.

Meta and EssilorLuxottica began working together on Ray-Ban branded smart glasses in 2019. Within the framework of this cooperation, technological achievements and expertise in eyewear were combined.

Meta founder and chief executive officer Mark Zuckerberg stated that he is proud of the work done together with EssilorLuxottica. The head of the Facebook parent company also positively characterized the roadmap of the relevant project for the future. According to Mark Zuckerberg, in this case, there is an opportunity to turn glasses into a new major technology platform and at the same time make it fashionable.

It is worth noting that last week the media released information that Apple is considering entering the smart glasses market. The mentioned technology giant is currently conducting its own studies on the nowadays available products of the mentioned category. Against the background of this information, it can be assumed that the smart glasses market could potentially become a new area of competition for the largest players in the global technology sector.
