Europe’s PayTech Nexi has integrated Wero, the homegrown European payment method, into German online retail. The first merchants (BAUR, Quelle and Bünting) are already on board.

Nexi Brings Wero to German eCommerce: 53 Million Users Can Now Pay at BAUR, Quelle and Bünting

BAUR, Quelle and the Bünting Group (operating Combi.de and MyTime.de) are the first German online shops preparing to offer Wero at checkout. BAUR and Quelle, both part of the BAUR-Gruppe, plan to roll it out through their “ComfortPay” service. Nexi says more merchant names will be announced in the coming weeks.

Roberto Catanzaro, Chief Business Officer at Nexi and EPI Board Member, noted: “The implementation of Wero for BAUR, Quelle and Bünting marks an important milestone for Nexi and for the development of a more sovereign and competitive European payments landscape. We are pleased to support the rollout of Wero through Nexi Germany’s eCommerce integration and through Computop, our group company, which acts as the technical service provider for Wero.”

Built on real-time, account-to-account transfers infrastructure, Wero processes payments faster, cheaper and, critically for EU payment sovereignty, without routing money through American card networks. For European retailers and consumers tired of depending on Visa and Mastercard, that’s a meaningful shift.

Martina Weimert, CEO of the European Payments Initiative, said: “We are pleased to see Nexi is offering Wero as a payment method for their merchants in Germany. At the end of 2025 we announced Wero’s upcoming roll-out for online purchases, so this is an important next step in bringing a new account-to-account payment experience to a broader range of merchants and customers in the German market.”

Wero launched for person-to-person transfers in Belgium, France and Germany back in 2024, and has grown to 53 million users across those three markets. Its expansion into e-commerce in Germany began at the end of 2025, with France and Belgium following progressively through 2026. Point-of-sale payments are planned as the next frontier.

Behind the initiative is the European Payments Initiative (EPI), backed by 16 European banks and payment service providers as shareholders, with 45 institutions now part of the wider membership. Larger migrations are also in the pipeline. At least 15 million Payconiq users in Luxembourg are expected to move to Wero by late 2026, and all iDEAL merchants in the Netherlands by the end of 2027 — signalling genuine continental ambition for a unified European payments system.

For now, German shoppers at BAUR and Quelle will be among the first to feel the difference at checkout.
