OpenAI to Add Monetization Feature to GPT Store

OpenAI has figured out a way for generative pre-trained transformer (GPT) creators to monetize their personalized AI systems with the help of its newly launched GPT Store marketplace.

OpenAI to Add Monetization Feature to GPT Store

Artificial intelligence (AI) firm OpenAI, the creator of the most popular generative AI chatbot ChatGPT, has announced its GPT monetization plans along with the launch of the GPT Store for ChatGPT Plus, Team and Enterprise users.

The firm first laid out its plans for an AI systems online marketplace in November 2023. Almost simultaneously, OpenAI rolled out a new function enabling customers to create their own tailored versions of ChatGPT (GPTs) dedicated to specific tasks. However, at the time, the launch of a virtual platform didn’t work out.

The reason for the delay wasn’t officially explained. According to certain media reports, the product needed improvements based on initial feedback. Other theories attribute the holdup to temporary conflict issues within the OpenAI management. Approximately at the planned launch time, Sam Altman was first fired from his post as CEO, then offered to join the Microsoft team, and finally came back as CEO under a new managing board.

On Jan. 11, OpenAI finally introduced the GPT Store marketplace, where customers can explore popular and trending GPTs in various categories such as DALL·E, writing, research, programming, education, and lifestyle.

Moreover, the company announced it would launch a GPT builder revenue program in Q1 2024. The new feature will roll out gradually. Initially, US builders will participate in the program, getting paid based on user engagement with their GPTs. OpenAI hasn’t yet provided clear details on how the revenue system would work, the criteria for payment eligibility, as well as the potential payment amount or mode.

The new Store feature is located within the ChatGPT website. The updated ChatGPT Team plan will give customers access to a private section of the GPT Store, where GPTs can be securely published to one’s workspace.

The next step is for the GPT Store to be available for ChatGPT Enterprise customers. This version will include enhanced admin controls.

GPTs can be created in a few basic categories. Thus, GPTs that specialise in DALL-E create images from ideas, and the writing section refines text from the drafted outline. Productivity-dedicated GPTs enhance efficiency, while research and analysis GPTs help users interpret the information they find. Programming tools support coding and learning efforts, the education section explores ideas and revisits professional skills, and the lifestyle GPTs give advice on travel, workouts, style and food.
