Rather than exposing the full OpenAI ChatGPT interface, PhonePe will embed AI-powered tools tailored to payment-use cases in its consumer and business apps, so that users can ask for help with travel planning, product recommendations, or comparison before making UPI payments.
PhonePe announced a new partnership with OpenAI to integrate advanced AI features across its consumer app, merchant app, and the Indus Appstore.
The collaboration will introduce embedded ChatGPT-powered assistance designed to help users make more informed decisions before completing transactions. The available assisted services range from comparing travel options to receiving product recommendations and clarifying payment choices.
By incorporating these capabilities directly into its platform, PhonePe aims to make AI more accessible to millions of users and businesses across India. The company believes the integration will enhance customer experience, simplify everyday financial actions, and support smarter shopping and payment journeys. OpenAI, in turn, gains a deep, native presence within one of India’s most widely used digital ecosystems.
The announcement comes at a time when India’s payments industry is rapidly experimenting with conversational and agentic AI. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) recently launched a pilot with Razorpay and OpenAI that enables users to complete UPI transactions through natural conversation, while Axis Bank and Airtel Payments Bank are supporting the initiative.
Paytm has also adopted AI-powered search through its Perplexity integration, helping users access financial information more intuitively within its app. Meanwhile, ToneTag introduced an AI-enabled point-of-sale device capable of interacting with customers and assisting merchants directly at checkout.
Together, these developments point to a clear trend: India’s digital payments landscape is shifting toward AI-driven experiences that combine discovery, decision-making, and transactions into a single, seamless flow.
