Visa job openings reveal the company’s “ambitious crypto product roadmap”
Visa’s head of crypto, Cuy Sheffield, posted about the senior software engineers’ job openings on Twitter, stating that the company has an “ambitious crypto product roadmap.”
The new team members will be helping Visa drive the mainstream adoption of public blockchain networks and stablecoin payments. The company is particularly interested in people with experience in Github Copilot and other AI-assisted engineering tools to write and debug smart contracts.
Although the company doesn’t provide many details about the products it’s developing, the given Web3 Software Engineer opening says that “the next generation of products” will “facilitate commerce in everyone’s digital and mobile lives.” These products will have “intuitive features that expose profound new value” for the customers.
The payment giant has been exploring the possibilities of Web3, crypto and blockchain for a while. In 2021, the company teamed up with First Boulevard, a neobank that focuses on wealth generation for the Black community, to trial Visa’s crypto APIs. Later that year, Visa launched crypto advisory services for retailers, institutions and other organizations interested in cryptocurrencies, NFT and blockchain.
Last year, Visa started issuing its brand crypto-supporting cards in LATAM and partnered with Blockchain.com to launch crypto debit cards. In 2023, the company continued the practice, teaming up with Wirex for another crypto card product.
Besides, Visa has a team of researchers and engineers studying the security, scalability, interoperability and privacy of different blockchain protocols to propose possible use cases. Late last year, they suggested a novel concept of smart contracts enabling automated programmable payments (e.g. regular bill payments) from a self-custodial blockchain wallet called a “delegable account.”
