The central bank of France is currently accepting applications from fintech companies to participate in its central bank digital currency (CBDC) experiment.

The aim of the initiative is to discover the opportunities offered by this technology.

Besides, the bank wants to identify concrete cases integrating CBDC in innovative procedures for the clearing and settlement of tokenized financial assets.

As to the main requirement, all the applicants must be located in the European Union or in the European Economic Area. In addition, they will have to find a suggestion to one of 3 specific use cases the French bank is working on.

The results of these experiments will be a key element of the Banque de France’s contribution to a broader project conducted by the Eurosystem on the potential implementations of a CBDC. Indeed, any decision to create a CBDC is a matter for the Eurosystem
