Barclays moves, lends, invests and protects money for 48 million customers and clients worldwide. Its award-winning banking app was the first British mobile banking solution to enable customers to view their current accounts from several other UK banks.

The app also has a useful feature for those wishing to control their daily transactions. App users can set a spending limit for all debit card payments, capping individual transactions at a certain threshold.

This spending limit doesn’t affect cash machine withdrawals, refunds, charitable donations or mobile top-ups. It applies only to essential P2P and C2B payments.

  • To limit your spending in-app, tap ‘Quick links’ on your home screen.
  • Select the ‘Cards’ menu, just below your account balance.
  • Choose the debit card you want to change a spending limit for.
  • Tap ‘Spending limit’ and turn the switch on.
  • Select one of the eight spending values between (£0 and £1,000) – this will be the maximum allowed amount for each transaction using the given card.
  • ‘Save’ the changes.
  • Repeat the same scenario with your other debit cards if you wish.

Some debit cards also allow you to manage your withdrawal limit in the Barclays app. To do that:

  • Under ‘Quick links’ on the home screen, tap ‘Cards’
  • Select the debit card you want to change the withdrawal limit for
  • Tap ‘Cash machine settings’
  • Choose your preferred limit and select ‘Save’.

Personal current accounts (including Cash Card accounts) have a default daily withdrawal limit of £300. You can change it to £0 – £500.

Premier and Platinum customers enjoy the enhanced default limit of £1,000 per day. You can customise it to between £0 – £2,000.

Business Banking doesn’t give you the modification options. You’ll have a fixed withdrawal limit of £750 per day.

Cash Card (Youth) for minor customers has a preset default withdrawal limit of £50 per day. You cannot increase that amount, but can decide to make it smaller, setting your daily limit from £0 to £50.

To turn cash machine withdrawals on or off in your app:

  • Under ‘Quick links’ on the home screen, tap ‘Cards’
  • Select the debit card you need
  • Tap ‘Cash machine settings’
  • Tap ‘Cash machine use’
  • Turn the switch on to use or off to not use cash machines at all.

You can also control whether your card can be used for online, phone or app payments. All the related settings can be found under the ‘Cards’ menu.

Please, mind that Barclays also sets daily spending limits for all online and mobile transactions.

Thus, the total daily payment limit to existing payees via the app is:

  • £2,000 for new payees on the first payment only;
  • £10,000 for Personal current accounts;
  • £30,000 for Premier accounts;
  • £50,000 for Business accounts.

If you need to make payments that exceed these limits, you’ll need to visit one of the bank’s branches.

Due to the decreasing use of bricks-and-mortar banking services, some Barclays branches have closed or are scheduled to close in 2022. Others have changed their regular opening hours or have temporarily closed because of the coronavirus situation.

To find the nearest branch, visit the given link, enter your address, town or postcode in the search box and tap ‘search’. Turn on location services for your device to see nearby branches automatically.

When making transfers between your different Barclays accounts in the app, the transaction limit is £250,000.

The bank can increase or decrease the daily limit, letting customers know about the changes two months before they come effective.
