Residents and tourists of Türkiye will soon be able to pay for public transport services in half of the country’s cities directly with their credit, debit or prepaid card.

The new system has already been implemented in 11 provinces and it doesn’t require passengers to purchase a ticket or local transport pass.

The technology provider Asis Elektronik expects the innovation to enhance the touristic value of the covered regions since it greatly facilitates travel. The system supports the use of contactless foreign payment cards at the turnstiles, so the tourists won’t have to wander around looking for a place to buy a ticket or fill up the transport pass.

Virtually the whole territory of Türkiye is covered with public transportation such as long-distance buses, mini-buses, ferries and domestic flights.

ASIS Electronics is one of the national market leaders, enabling the digital transformation of urban transport and facilities. The company develops integrated technology solutions on alternative payment channels and redesigns the fintech payment ecosystem of Türkiye with the smart cities of the future.

A recent survey conducted by ABI Research on behalf of the NFC Forum discovered that the use of contactless ticketing on public transportation is a key driver of the NFC contactless technology growth.

Many countries across the globe are testing the use of contactless fare payments today. Contactless payments with a bank card or mobile wallet are becoming more commonplace, but some countries are going even further. For instance, South Korea has recently piloted a ‘tagless’ fare payment system which allows passengers to pay for their tickets simply by walking through a ticketing gate.
