Mastercard returns as headline partner of Open Banking Expo Canada 2024

This year’s Open Banking Expo Canada anticipates welcoming more than 600 executives from Open Banking, Open Finance and Open Payments domains to the Metro Toronto Convention Centre to discuss how to plan for and execute consumer-driven finance by 2025.

Darrell MacMullin, Senior Vice President, Products and Solutions of Mastercard Canada, said: “Consumer-driven finance, or the Open Banking framework, will mark a pivotal moment in the modernization of Canada’s financial ecosystem, revolutionizing how businesses and consumers approach data security and financial management. As a global technology company, Mastercard facilitates critical connections—linking consumers with retailers, lenders with borrowers, and governments with citizens, underlining the importance of trust and secure transactions.”

In a keynote address at Open Banking Expo Canada 2023, MacMullin described the innovations Open Banking will bring for consumers and small businesses in Canada, and the critical need for trust and security to be at the forefront.

In November 2023, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland committed to delivering Open Banking – referred to as consumer-driven finance – in her Fall Economic Statement. By 2025, the Department of Finance aims to adopt legislation and implementation of a governance framework.

“We are thrilled to welcome back Mastercard as headline partner of Open Banking Expo Canada,” said Adam Cox, co-founder of Open Banking Expo.

“With the Canadian government having promised to develop and implement a legislative framework for consumer-driven banking by 2025, the Expo is the perfect opportunity to align on strategies, refocus efforts, and share best practices.”

Speakers representing banks, credit unions, fintechs, solutions providers and industry bodies have already been confirmed, including Andrew Moor, president and chief executive officer of EQ Bank, Gonzalo Escribano Tamayo, head of public policy for Open Banking at BBVA, and Michelle Winsor, chief executive officer of Accelera.

Brigit Carroll, policy lead, North America at Wise, Jamie Kruspel, Mainstreet Credit Union’s chief transformation officerand Nezihe Aquino, senior vice president, enterprise risk and chief risk officer at Vancity have also been confirmed as speakers.
