Anthropic has upgraded the core engine behind its Claude AI tools, promising faster performance and lower costs without raising prices.

Anthropic has rolled out Claude Sonnet 4.6 as the new default AI model across its Claude platform, replacing the previous baseline model for both free and paid users. The update focuses primarily on improved speed and cost efficiency while maintaining performance levels expected by developers and enterprise customers.
Claude Sonnet 4.6 is now the standard model powering Claude’s web interface, API access, and enterprise integrations. According to Anthropic, the upgrade delivers faster response times and improved computational efficiency without changes to existing pricing structures. The company positions Sonnet 4.6 as a balanced model optimized for scale, offering enhanced performance while remaining cost-effective for widespread deployment.
In addition to performance gains, Sonnet 4.6 introduces improvements in coding capabilities, reasoning accuracy, and long-context handling. The model supports significantly expanded computer use capabilities and context windows, allowing users to process longer documents, larger codebases, and more complex multi-step tasks in a single session. These enhancements are designed to support both everyday productivity use cases and technical workflows.
The default model shift is part of a broader series of updates across Anthropic’s AI portfolio. Earlier in February, the company released Claude Opus 4.6, a higher-performance model aimed at enterprise-grade reasoning, advanced analytics, and large-scale development tasks. While Sonnet serves as the general-purpose default, Opus is positioned as a premium option for complex and high-stakes workloads. At the same time, the company notes that many developers with early access prefer Sonnet 4.6 not only to its predecessor but also to an earlier premium AI model – Claude Opus 4.5.
Anthropic’s platform is leveraged by a wide range of users, including individual consumers, software developers, startups, and large enterprises. Use cases span content creation, research assistance, customer support automation, legal document review, coding, and data analysis. The company has increasingly focused on enterprise adoption, with businesses integrating Claude models into internal knowledge systems, productivity tools, and AI-powered applications.
The rollout also comes amid significant corporate expansion. Anthropic recently secured a $30 billion Series G funding round, strengthening its position in the competitive AI model market and supporting further development of its infrastructure and product ecosystem.
