Crossmint Launches Agentic Cards API Leveraging Smart Visa Tech

Visa Intelligent Commerce and Basis Theory enable a new Agentic Cards API capability developed by Crossmint for agents in OpenClaw, Claude Code, Hermes, Zo Computer, and other agentic platforms to pay for things with supported Visa cards.

Crossmint Launches Agentic Cards API Leveraging Smart Visa Tech

Stablecoin payments and blockchain wallet platform Crossmint has launched a new API offering for developers to link eligible US-issued Visa credit and debit cards for agent systems use.

The functionality is empowered by Visa Intelligent Commerce service suite. End users can create tokenized credentials with Visa Intelligent Commerce Connect and apply existing Visa cards for agentic payments with strong controls in place. Card numbers and CVCs are not revealed to or stored by third-party services. Vaulting mechanisms and tokenization technology protect sensitive data and agents have limited visibility into raw card numbers, helping achieve applicable PCI compliance.

“The agentic economy has been missing its most basic piece of infrastructure: a secure, open payment layer that can work for every agent, on every platform,” says Crossmint Co-Founder Alfonso Gómez-Jordana Mañas. “Now developers can give their users the ability to equip agents with a payment method that’s scoped, under their control, and built on trusted payments infrastructure.”

Another part of the solution foundations, Visa’s fintech partner Basis Theory provides a secure payments and sensitive data infrastructure layer. This engine ensures that real card numbers, CVCs, and tokenized credentials are handled independently of the agent environment and that agents are receiving access only to the data they’re authorised to access.

“Secure agentic payments require the same PCI-compliant infrastructure that underpins the broader payments ecosystem,” says Colin Luce, Co-Founder and CEO of Basis Theory. “Crossmint is built on that foundation. Agents transact. Credentials stay vaulted. That’s the standard every agentic payment layer should be held to.”

Agentic payments are starting to emerge at every transaction level. However, in many cases, the underpinning infrastructure lacks widely adopted, card-network-compatible methods for enabling payments. It often leads to data leaks and other unfortunate incidents. A review of published OpenClaw skills found exposed card credentials in 7.1% of cases. That might not be a major share, but when it comes to finances, every minute chance for sensitive data exposure counts.

Besides launching docs for agentic card payments API developers, Crossmint has rolled out the same capability inside lobster.cash, its own payment solution for AI agents. Lobster.cash can be installed as an embedded payment tool in existing agent platforms like Claude Code, OpenClaw, Hermes, Zo Computer, and more. With Lobster.cash, users can issue a virtual card with set spending limits or assign AI agent to a stablecoin wallet. When agents discover products/subscriptions or services to purchase on behalf of the client, they request access to a virtual card or wallet to make this transaction. They don’t get access to credit card details or private keys.

Along with Visa’s tech, Crossmint agentic payment stack also supports Mastercard Agent Pay integrations and HTTP-native micropayments with x402 protocol.
