Klarna Evolves From BNPL Leader to Multi-Functional Fintech Platform With Instant P2P Payment Launch

Swedish fintech Klarna has rolled out a new payment service, enabling users in 13 European countries to send money to other Klarna app users directly and instantly using just their phone number, email address, QR code, or saved contact.

Transactions themselves run over traditional banking rails. However, Klarna performs all necessary fraud and eligibility checks before processing the transfer. Besides, the fintech unicorn is already exploring stablecoin-based payment options to further enhance speed, reach, and efficiency of available money transfers.

Using the new function, Klarna’s customers can send money to friends and family, split bills, gift cash, and more, all within a few minutes and via a simple payment mechanism.

Initially, transfers work exclusively between Klarna users, but the company shared plans to soon expand instant P2P transfers to non-Klarna customers and enable cross-border payments along with domestic transfers, covering even more everyday banking and money management needs.

The service, initially available in Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom, is a welcome addition to the expanding Klarna’s payment option suite.

Starting as a flexible loan solution for e-commerce, Klarna has soon outgrown the BNPL model, currently actively working on ambitious project of becoming a full-scale neobank in essence. Before P2P payments, the fintech company introduced flexible debit card linked to the user’s Klarna account with broad acceptance and integrated payment options. Reportedly, this financial product has aggregated over 4 million sign-ups in just four months after launch.

The platform also creates temporary one-time virtual cards generated through the app for customers to be able to leverage Klarna’s BNPL options even on sites that don’t directly support Klarna as a payment method. Besides, Klarna offers a digital wallet and balance account that users can fund from various sources to make payments, track purchases, and manage their money centrally in the app — a major step toward becoming an everyday banking service hub.

Next to the money management capabilities, the Klarna app remains a e-commerce portal as well. It still functions as a shopping hub and marketplace, offering curated deals, price‑drop alerts, and merchant integrations that go beyond simple payments. Some of the Klarna’s shopping experiences are AI-driven and promise to become even more sophisticated and personalized as the company recently partnered with Google Cloud to explore dynamic lookbooks and personalized product campaigns.
