Mastercard and Rabobank have completed the first payment in the Netherlands initiated and executed by an AI agent.
Mastercard and Rabobank carried out what they describe as the first payment in the Netherlands completed through an AI agent on 30 April 2026.
In the transaction, an AI assistant used a prompt from a user to book a coffee tasting experience through Priceless.com, Mastercard’s platform for experiences. The payment was made using a Rabobank Mastercard credit card.
The companies said the payment was processed using Mastercard Agent Pay. According to Mastercard, the AI agent does not access card details and operates within permissions set by the user. The transaction was completed within a controlled setup.
The payment flow was handled using existing Rabobank card payment infrastructure. Therefore, Rabobank’s role in this pilot is essentially the issuing bank and payment participant on the customer side.
Jan-Willem van der Schoot, Country Manager at Mastercard Netherlands, said that AI could make life easier for consumers, but only if trust and security remain central. He added that the first AI-driven payment in the Netherlands showed how innovation and responsible payments could go together.
Suzan van Eeten, Tribe Lead Payments & Savings at Rabobank, added that with this pilot the bank was looking ahead to the future of payments together with partners. She said they were testing step by step what was possible with AI-driven services. She also said they focused on safety, transparency and control for customers.
Mastercard described the transaction as a pilot within its broader work on AI-driven payment systems. Earlier this year, Mastercard conducted similar experimental transactions in India and across Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). Besides Agent Pay, Mastercard has also unveiled other missing components for the emerging agentic commerce infrastructure: Verifiable Intent open trust layer and a Virtual C-Suite set of AI agents for SMEs.
