The media reports that Microsoft is currently developing a new model of artificial intelligence.
According to insider information, the mentioned digital product of the technology giant based in Redmond, Washington, will be large enough to fully compete with the configurations of machine intelligence from competitors. In this case, among other things, similar developments from Google are meant.
The media reports that the new artificial intelligence model, which Microsoft is currently working on, has received the internal name MAI-1. It is worth noting that the relevant information is preliminary and has not yet been officially commented on by the technology giant.
The media, citing two Microsoft employees who spoke to reporters on condition of anonymity, claim that the process of developing a new artificial intelligence model is led by Mustafa Suleyman, co-founder of Google DeepMind and former CEO of a startup in area AI Inflection.
Insiders also claim that the technology giant has not yet resolved the issue regarding the functional purpose of MAI-1. The company continues to consider different scenarios for using the new artificial intelligence model. Moreover, Microsoft employees who spoke to reporters on condition of anonymity, said that the presentation of this AI configuration will be conduct at the Build developer conference, which will take place at the end of May.
MAI-1 is expected to be much larger than previous open source artificial intelligence models that the technology giant has worked on in the past. This also means that the new AI configuration will be more expensive.
In April, Microsoft launched a smaller model of artificial intelligence Phi-3-mini. This digital product is designed to gain a wider customer base through cost-effective options.
It’s worth mentioning that Microsoft has invested several billion dollars in OpenAI and implemented ChatGPT developer’s technology into its suite of productivity software. As a result of these actions, the competitiveness of the technology giant as a player in the artificial intelligence industry has significantly strengthened.
The media reports that as part of the development of a new AI model, Microsoft is setting aside a large cluster of servers equipped with Nvidia graphic processing units and large amounts of data to improve the product.
Insiders claim that MAI-1 will have approximately 500 billion parameters. It is worth noting that the GPT-4 from OpenAI has 1 trillion parameters.
In March, Microsoft tapped Mustafa Suleyman as the head of its consumer artificial intelligence unit. The company has also hired several employees of Inflection.
