Astrology is finding an unusual place in India’s financial markets, with some investors turning to planetary movements and birth charts when making decisions about stocks and other assets.

A recent report by The Economist highlights the growing business around so-called financial astrology in India. Business television channels have hosted astrologers who analyse market movements, while some traders have used astrology to guide decisions on options and futures. The practice also gained attention during the Covid-19 pandemic, when market uncertainty drove interest in alternative approaches to investing.
How financial astrology works
Financial astrology applies astrological concepts to financial markets. Practitioners may examine planetary movements, zodiac signs, lunar cycles or a market’s “birth chart” to identify periods they consider favourable or risky.
In India, the practice is often connected to Vedic astrology, or Jyotish, a traditional system that uses planetary positions, transits and other astrological calculations. Some modern practitioners combine these methods with conventional market data.
The approach can range from general market timing to highly specific predictions about individual stocks, indices or commodities. Some services now present historical backtesting and statistical analysis alongside astrological indicators.
From television to online services
Financial astrology is no longer limited to individual astrologers advising clients privately. A number of websites now offer market-oriented astrology services, including daily or weekly analysis of Indian stock indices.
Some platforms describe their services as educational or analytical rather than investment advice. Others make much stronger claims about their ability to identify market movements.
Financial astrology is generally regarded outside the target audience as a pseudoscientific approach to market prediction. Some practitioners are increasingly trying to address this criticism through backtesting. For example, financial astrology platforms have begun testing large numbers of historical planetary patterns against Indian market data.
However, historical correlations do not by themselves establish that astrology can predict future market movements. Financial markets are influenced by a wide range of factors, including company earnings, interest rates, economic data, investor behaviour and unexpected events.
For Indian investors, the continued interest in financial astrology points to a broader feature of the country’s financial culture: traditional beliefs and modern investment practices can exist alongside each other, even as investors increasingly gain access to quantitative tools and financial information.
